avoid overheating while sleeping

I was sent a complimentary blanket from Made With Love By Mary. All opinions are my own.

During the day, I get cold so easily. I’m usually the one person in the room who is cold while everyone else is comfortable. So, I’ve always found is strange that I often overheat at night. Growing up, I was the kid who had a “baby blanket” that I used way beyond my baby years. I think it’s fair to say that some tiny part of me never completely outgrew my love of blankets. To this day, I can’t sleep without a blanket even if it is hot. I’ve never been a fan of flat bedsheets because I wake up in a tangled mess. Over the years, I’ve had to get creative to come up with ways to avoid overheating while sleeping.

5 ways to avoid overheating while sleeping:

1. Use a heating or cooling system with a thermostat. Regardless of the time of year, it usually gets colder in the middle of the night than it is when I go to bed. So it isn’t efficient to leave heat, air conditioning or a fan on a set “speed” if the environment will be changing temperatures. Instead, use the thermostat setting on your furnace, or A/C. You can even get fans that have a thermostat setting.

2. Breathable clothing. When I first head to bed in the winter, I’m usually chilly so I want to throw on some fleece pajama pants. However, going with cotton is a smarter choice because fleece doesn’t breathe very well.

3. Cooling pillow. I used to wake up with the back of my neck feeling sweaty. A few years ago I did a review of the Comfort Revolution Cooling Memory Foam pillow and I still am using this pillow every day. It keeps my head/neck from overheating and it still hasn’t gone flat making it the best pillow I’ve ever owned, hands down.

4. A breathable blanket. Cotton Muslin is a popular material for baby swaddle blankets because it’s breathable and soft. I thought it would be a great material for adults who overheat at night, but the popular brands charge an arm and a leg for their adult size blankets. I found Made With Love By Mary, an Etsy shop that sells adult cotton muslin blankets at a great price. Cotton muslin is designed to get softer with each wash and I’ve only been able to wash my Made With Love By Mary blanket about five or six times so far. However, I haven’t found it to be quite as soft as cotton muslin blankets from some big baby brands, at least so far. I love my Made With Love By Mary blanket because it’s fairly thin but it has a noticeable texture and I don’t get tangled in it like I do regular bedsheets. It’s beautifully made, with gorgeous edging detail. The material is a gorgeous vibrant color (I don’t think my pictures truly do it justice). We’ve had hot summer days as well as some cool nights here in Michigan and it’s kept me at a comfortable temperature in both cases. Plus, the shop owner is extremely friendly and sweet – she makes me wish I could purchase everything from small businesses.

5. Wear pajamas that fit. Even when wearing breathable cotton pajamas, I’ve found that I overheat if my pj’s are over-sized and bunch-up in one area on my body. For example, if I wear really baggy PJ pants, the fabric will often gather on the back of my knee and when I wake up that area of my body will be sweaty. Going with pajamas that are comfortable but not baggy will prevent this.

Do you overheat while sleeping? How do you prevent it?
