Baby monitors are a great way to keep a closer watch on baby while they nap or sleep. Plus, monitors can be used for years because I find it nice to be able to supervise and check in on our older children too. We received the Philips AVENT Digital Video Monitor to review in preparation of our upcoming arrival. It amazes me how years ago, I was lucky to find an audio monitor that worked. Now days, technology allows me to clearly see our children through the Digital Video Monitor. Even though baby isn’t here quite yet, we’ve been testing out the Philips AVENT Digital Video Monitor with our other four children.

We first hung the mountable camera above the crib to see if we could get a full clear view of the entire inside. I am happy to report that we were successful and could see all four corners. However, since the baby isn’t here yet, we then moved the camera to a shelf in our school/play room so I could supervise workbook time while I make lunch. The LCD screen delivers a crisp clear picture in both locations including when the lights are out and the night vision kicks in.
Any noise, sounds, or movement comes through loud and clear on the parent unit. There are eight different volume settings and the highest one delivers a very loud audio of the slightest sounds but even the lowest setting is great if I’m in a quiet room. There are three blue lights that will light up in conjunction with any noise in the room where the video monitor is so I can actually “see” if there is any disturbances going on too.
The side of the Philips AVENT Digital Video Monitor contains four buttons. The power button, voice activation button, lullaby button and a button to control how long the lullabies will play. The instructions were not very clear so it took us a little while to figure the buttons out but now that I know all of their purposes, they make complete sense. The voice activation button will allow the screen to go black when there is no noise on the video monitor end for a short period of time. As soon as noise is detected, the screen/photo lights back up.
Overall, this is a nice monitor with many great features but there are some changes I would love to see. I would gladly pay a little extra for the option to be able to scan the complete room and zoom in. While the screen delivers a crisp clear picture, bigger is always better (in my opinion) when looking at my child so a bigger display would also be great. One item I wish Philips AVENT would include would be some clips for running the wire/cord to the outlet so it would be easier to keep the cord a safe distance away from the crib. I was able to run the cord over to our curtain rod and hook it which did create a safe environment but included clips would be ideal. I really like that this AVENT Digital Video Monitor Review does not connect to WIFI. After reading multiple news stories of strangers being able to tap into frequencies and see into homes through monitors, I actually prefer to not even have that be an option. The parent unit is lightweight and includes a belt clip for easy carrying that also rotates and becomes a “stand”. I especially like this for when I am cooking and don’t want to touch the unit to see what is happening.
