Some people think that to lead a green lifestyle, you have to turn your life upside down and make huges changes at all once. I like to think of being green as a journey – a life-long journey – and along the way, you make decisions that will either keep on the ‘green’ path, or make you stray a little bit away from that path. So for me, being green is all about the little steps along the way.

From switching to green cleaning products and personal care produts, to using energy efficient light bulbs, to recycling and composting, we, as a family, have made conscious efforts to be green for the sake of our health and for the planet. Another easy decision to make was to not use disposable plastic drinking straws. I actually had not bought any in at least 5-7 years. However, there are times when I feel straws are needed: for a delicious smoothie, for a large cup of iced tea, for a drink when I order take out, for fancy summer cocktails.

I discovered reusable glass drinking straws a while back and from the first sip, there was no going back! I especially love my new Strawsome drinking straws. They are nothing less than functional pieces of artwork!

They are all decorated by hand, by a mom in Michigan who started her dream business in which she combined her creativity and her desire to promote healthy and eco-friendly habits. They come in many different diameters (skinny, cocktail, regular, smoothie, and bubble tea) and lengths (6” to 12”). Some are slightly bent, some are straight, and the Just For Kids are slightly more bent so it’s easier for little ones to drink.

These glass straws come in a variety of colors and designs with dots and swirls. You can even get personalized monogrammed straws – which can come in handy if people can’t keep their hands off your Strawsome straw! These design features are not only super cute, they also strop your straw from rolling and falling on the floor. By the way, these straws are not indestructible but they are made of borosilicate glass tubing which is the strongest commercially available glass (same as Pyrex products). It’s a non-toxic material that can be used for cold or hot drinks. It’s also dishwasher safe!

You can purchase these straws individually or get a set with coordinating designs (or choose your favorite ones). You can also purchase a cleaning brush which is ideal to quickly rinse your straw especially if you drink thicker liquids such as smoothies that could dry up and become difficult to wash later. Also, if you plan on carrying your straws around (I personally keep 3 in my purse just in case), I recommend getting either a fabric case or a plastic one to protect your straws. My beautiful Purple To Go Case actually fits any of my straws (it can be used for any straight or slightly bent 8” and 6” straws, and Just For Kids straws).

As a side-note, these straws are SAFE for kids. Even though they might chew on plastic ones, these glass straws are extremely strong so you can be assured that your child won’t bite through it. My little one has been using them basically since she could use a straw with no problem whatsoever. The only word of caution I can give you is that you should not let them play with it when they are done drinking. The designs on them are more susceptible to breaking than the straw itself so just keep that in mind.
