*PetSmart sent dog costumes for review. All opinions are my own.
I decided that I wanted a pug a few years before we actually adopted my two pugs, Frank & Beans. When I decided that I wanted a pug someday, we were living in an apartment that didn’t allow pets. So I would go online and look up information about dogs in general as well as pugs and dream about someday having one. At some point I stumbled across a picture of a pug in a Halloween costume. It was adorably funny and I remember wondering if my future pug would let me put clothing on it. A few months after bringing Frank & Beans home I decided to try putting a shirt on them and they let me without a problem. That’s when it occurred to me that not only could I dress them up for Halloween, I had the ability to make them even cuter than a single dog in a costume because I could get them coordinating costumes!
PetSmart already has their dog costumes available and they have a great selection to choose from. We were sent two sets of coordinating costumes. One set is Pooh with Eeyore and the other is Mrs Piggy with Kermit. All four costumes have two velcro tabs. To put the costumes on you lay the costume across the dogs back, and then velcro under the chin and across the belly. This makes them all really easy to put on which is great but it also provides for more “wiggle room” on sizing than dog t-shirts or sweaters have. I’ve tried many shirts and sweaters on the pugs and they tend to be too tight in the shoulder area because pugs are barrel chested. These costumes don’t have material in the armpit or chest area so it isn’t an issue.
For your reference, Beans has a 22 inch girth (widest part of her body behind her front legs) while Frank has a 24 inch girth. Frank has a 16 inch neck and Beans has a 15 inch neck.
The Pooh costume is a size XL while the Mrs Piggy costume is a Large. Both costumes fit frank with room to grow – if I were to put the velcro on his belly area tight there would be excess leftover, but the chest velcro fits perfectly. The Mrs Piggy costume has a hole in the back of the neck area to allow a collar or harness D-Ring to slip through to use the costume while on a leash. The costumes are about the same length, both an inch or two longer than Frank who has about a 14.5 inch back from collar to above the tail.
The Eeyore costume that Beans wore is a size medium and fits Beans nearly perfectly. It’s a great length for her and both velcro straps can be made really tight without overlapping. The Kermit costume is small/medium because it’s very adjustable – all but about 3″ of the material that goes around the dog’s neck is velcro so it could be made quite small or quite large. This fits Beans really well also.
Both sets are super cute and I was thrilled that all four outfits fit my dogs because they are hard to fit into traditional dog clothing.
