I received products from Candlewick press for my review. All opinions are my own.
It seems more and more like Halloween celebrations are centered on unhealthy sugary snacks. I don’t mind if my daughters have a couple of treats but I don’t like the idea of them sitting around eating pounds of empty calories, over processed treats fully of food dye and artificial flavors. I let them pick a few of their favorites and then I swap their candy for other goodies like small toys, a game, a special outing or books. This year, I selected a few books from Candlewick Press to help us celebrate Halloween.
Leroy Ninker Saddles Up by Kate DiCamillo- Leroy has everything he needs to be a cowboy, except a horse. Then he meets Maybelline, a fun loving horse. Leroy does his best to care for Maybelline but forgets one important rule. What did Leroy forget? Leroy Ninker Saddles Up is for ages 6-9 years; Grade 1-4.
I’m My Own Dog by David Ezra Stein- This playful story takes you on an adventure through the eyes of a dog. This dog explains to readers that in fact it is he who helps take care of us by fetching our slippers, lying on our feet to keep them warm, and even taking us for a walk to get some exercise. I’m My Own Dog is suggested for ages 4-8; preschool- grade 3.
Bramble and Maggie Spooky Season by Jessie Haas- This is the third adventure for Bramble and Maggie. This story describes all the fun and excitement that fall has to offer. Readers get to explore sights and sounds including a scary scarecrow. Bramble and Maggie Spooky Season is for ages 5-8; kindergarten- grade 3.
These three books from Candlewick Press are a fun way to celebrate Halloween.

Hello, my name is Laurie. My family and I live near the Oregon coast. When we aren’t at work, in school, or on the volleyball court, we enjoy traveling, cheering for our favorite sports teams, playing outdoors, and checking off items on our bucket list. We are lucky in that both sets of our parents, as well as our siblings and their families, live within an hour of us. We get together often to help one another out, celebrate milestones, and go on adventures together.

These are great book selections for any time, but I also don’t like giving a ton of candy at Halloween, or Easter, for that matter. I collected some scary books a little after last Halloween so should be ready this year!
