Do you need some inspiration to improve the look of your living room? You don’t have to change everything in your living room to make it attractive. You don’t need a grand plan either. There are so many simple things that you can do that will transform your living room completely. Contrary to what most people believe, designers don’t have a rule book that they follow when they are doing their interior design work. They are just creative people who love to dream, imagine and explore. Here are 5 interior design tips that will improve the look of your living room;

1. Resist the temptation of overcrowding your living room

There are probably so many things that you want to put in your living room. However, if you want to have a gracious living space, you have to ensure that there is enough space for people to maneuver with ease. Do not fill up your living room with lots of furniture. Instead of filling up the room, focus on high putting few high quality pieces that will make it look better than the way it will look when it is stuffed with poor quality pieces. Instead of spending your money on so many things that will not stand out, buy a few pieces that will stand out in your living room.

2. Choose the right window treatments

A room without good window treatments will look cheap and unfinished. Window treatments provide a budget friendly way to make your living room elegant. Stick to elegant materials such as linen, cotton and natural silk. If you don’t like draperies, try wood blinds or woven bamboo shades. Just be sure that your windows are dressed perfectly.

3. Have a focal point in your living room

In any production, there are always leading roles and supporting roles. The same rule applies in interior design. Choose an item in your living room and make it a focal point. All other items that are present in your living room should take a secondary role. You can make a piece of art the focal point. You can choose anything else as your focal point as long as it has the power to attract the eyes of anyone who comes to your living room.

4. Pick the colour of paint last

The biggest mistake that many homeowners make is picking the colour of paint for their living rooms before doing other things that need to be done. You should choose the colour of paint for your living room last. You want a colour that will that best complement your artwork, upholstery, rugs and all other things that are present in your living room, right? There are so many paint colours with various tones, tints and shades. The colours also look different depending on the source of light. You can only pick the best colour for your living room when everything else has been done.

5. Ignore all interior design principles; focus on creativity

Interior design guidelines will give you a good starting point when designing your living room. However, you should not stick to any set of rules. Go with things that will reflect your personal style, tastes and preferences. Let your creativity take control.
