Young Scientists Club ~ The Magic School Bus Science Explosion + Giveaway (US) 9/16

I’ve always enjoyed hands on experiences.  Even back when I was in school, I can still remember some of the experiments and activities that included hands on learning fun as opposed to just reading about it in a book.  So when I did daycare for five years, I strived to include just that as it was clear that the kids thrived off that type of learning.  Now as a mother and also homeschool teacher, I still keep my eyes peeled for opportunities to expose the kids to learning in this same manner.  I’ve had the pleasure of working with the Young Scientists Club in the past so when I saw they were offering a product, I was excited to work with them again.

The Magic School Bus Science Explosion is actually two exciting games in one as the laminated board is double sided.  The first thing I noticed when opening the box is that the directions are listed directly on the cover.  Love that!  Paper directions can get lost easily with young children in the house.  We began setting up for Game A and adapted the rules as stated for the number of players we had.  (The only things I needed to provide were baking soda and vinegar.  Simple ingredients that we always have on hand.)  Although our 3 year old did jump in and start playing so we still used the adapted version but dug out a few more cards.  The rules are fairly simple to follow and the kids really enjoyed playing.  I loved the fun facts we learned as we went.  The variety of card topics includes 16 different varieties with a total of 80 fact cards.

While the winner is supposed to have the honors of making the volcano explode, I changed the rules.  I decided that it took a team effort for one player to collect all the cards needed so everyone poured in their cups at the same time to create a spectacular finish to a very fun game!  So fun in fact, that game two started as soon as lunch was cleaned up!  The only complaint I have is that I don’t feel the plastic “volcano” will hold up well over time.  I wish it was made of silicone which is super flexible and would collapse for storage and open nicely for play.  The plastic volcano stays bent and I’m worried it will crack over time.  Although the game could definitely be played with a cup or jar in the middle as well if that happens.
