Nutrisystem frozen food storage

I have been provided with a Nutrisystem plan in exchange for sharing my honest experience and results on my blog. All opinions are my own.

One of the concerns that I’ve heard from people considering joining Nutrisystem is food storage. Most households are used to visiting the grocery store much more frequently than once a month. While Nutrisystem does ship a month’s worth of food to you at a time, it’s not quite as overwhelming as it would be to buy an entire months worth of groceries from the store.

One reason why it’s not like buying a month’s worth of grocery store foods is because the meals are smaller. Only the very biggest dinner entree containers are close to the single-serve frozen box containers that you’d see in a grocery store. The rest are smaller. I would say that the ‘average’ Nutrisystem entree is a bit smaller than palm-sized, some are a couple inches tall while others are extremely thin.

The other big reason why a month’s worth of Nutrisystem isn’t as overwhelming is because the entrees come in their final form. Meaning, a Nutrisystem burger comes in a package that includes the bun and the burger already assembled.

However, it does take a little organization to adjust to Nutrisystem because there are a lot of little packages that get delivered. Ryan is on a plan that includes both shelf-stable and frozen entrees so his order comes in two shipments within a couple days of each other. One is just a cardboard box that includes the shelf-stable items. The box comes with two layers, so you can pull a tray off the top and more food is underneath. In my photo above you can see the upper tray pulled out of the box and placed on the floor, but everything  shelf-stable comes in a single large box. The frozen order comes in a large foam container with dry ice and that is the frozen items, pictured below.

With the exception of a few boxes, most of the frozen entrees come in small plastic baggies. To organize the frozen entrees I bought four plastic bins from the local dollar store for $1 each. The Nutrisystem labels come color-coded, breakfast entrees are orange, lunch is blue, dinner is red and dessert is purple. I bought a blue, orange and red bin but there was no purple so I bought green. When the Nutrisystem order arrives I separate the entrees into the four bins. Most month’s Ryan will have four or five larger boxed entrees that won’t fit in the bin but they work great for everything else. These bins take up A little more than 1/2 of my freezer.

Ryan gets about twice as many shelf-stable entrees as frozen so there are a lot more packages. If you want to organize these in bins you could buy larger bins. However, we decided to devote one of our kitchen cabinets to Ryan’s shelf-stable Nutrisystem entrees. Seems how he only eats Nutrisystem, we aren’t buying as much from the grocery store and this results in us having the cabinet space for his Nutrisystem.

Our cabinets have three shelves. Ryan’s shelf stable dinners tend to take up more space, and he has to order twice as many snacks as entrees because he has two snacks each day. So we use the top shelf for desserts, the center shelf is breakfast on the left and lunch on the right, and the bottom shelf is dinners. Ryan has a lot of desserts that come in really small packages that won’t ‘stand up’ like individual cookies in bags, for example. These really small entrees he keeps in a basket so he can pull it down and pick through. For everything else, he stacks each entree type near the other (such as all of his apple cinnamon oatmeals next to each other), so he can see what varieties he has left.

I’m not on nutrisystem, but I have been thinking about ordering from them.

When I was on Nutrisystem I kept food in the boxes and it was a mess to dig through. Great idea.

I’m trying to GAIN weight so I won’t be on that plan. Good organization.

I have the same lime green container from the 99 cent store. Great storage containers for anything. I don’t have a freezer in my little frig so all that food would be a problem. Looks so organized. I know you’re so proud of Ryan. He’s done such a good job sticking with it.

This is so smart! It’s actually a really great idea for many types of food. Those dollar store containers can’t be beat! We use them for a lot of storage around the house- I can’t believe I never thought of using them to organize the pantry!

Ryan is doing great! Way to go!

The more I read about your “journey” with Nutrisystem the more I want to try it. Also really nice organizing ideas.

I’m not on Nutrisystem but this looks like a great way to put the fridge and pantry in order so that it’d be easy to find what you want!

I’ve been looking into nutrisystwm but my freezer is smaller than I’m used to in my current apartment. I was concerned that I couldn’t accommodate the monthly shipments. You’ve given me some hope. Thank you so much for taking the time to break it down like this.
