Optimizing your office space can help improve productivity whether you work in public or at home, and whether you’re employed by a business or in business for yourself. I am self-employed and work from home, so I am directly impacted by my productivity. The more work I get done each day, the more I can grow my business and the more I benefit. Of course, productivity is a great trait to focus on for the traditionally employed as well.

Five ways to optimize your office space:

  • Use online documents. For years I relied on programs that would save files on my computer and enjoyed that system. Now that most of us use the internet from our laptops, tablets and phones it’s more efficient to use online document programs that you can access from any device. I like being able to edit my spreadsheets and to-do lists from any device by simply logging into my account.
  •  Connect your email addresses. I got my first email account while I was in middle school and would hate to guess how many I’ve had since then. When I started blogging I was using a random email address that I had created for personal use. Later I realized I needed a blogging-specific email address so I made a new one but I had clients who would still email me at the old address. To avoid the risk of missing important emails I have all of my email addresses forwarded so I log into one account and see them all – eliminating the need to ever log into the older ones.
  • Research and invest in a desk and chair that will be good on your body. Doing office work can be hard on your body especially your back and wrist if you aren’t sitting properly. Keeping proper posture while working can help you avoid health problems down the road and keep you feeling comfortable throughout the workday.
  • Add de-cluttering to your schedule. Taking time to recycle old papers, reorganize files and delete and organize your inbox can keep your physical and online space easier to manage and help you avoid wasting time digging through old files or papers that are irrelevant when searching for what you need.
