Growing up, I was never a fan of science, biology, technology, or engineering. I took the minimum amount of classes required in each of those and spent my elective hours on other options. For the most part, I found most of those subjects to be boring and more for boys than girls. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize that isn’t true and girls can enjoy and succeed in those areas of expertise as well as any male. As for being boring, that is in the eye of the beholder! Any subject can become fun when hands on learning is implemented in place of staring at a book for hours. So, to aid the success of girls while encouraging them to pursue environments typically labeled “boyish”, STEMbox was born.
STEMbox is a monthly subscription box geared for girls, ages 7-13, to help them learn, explore, and have fun with science, technology, engineering, and math. Each box focuses on a specific topic and offers hands-on home experiments that can be executed with the included tools and supplies.
Even though geared for girls, the whole family was excited to open our STEMbox. Inside, we found everything needed for Owl Pellet Dissection! The guide provides extra information about the topic as well as step-by-step instructions. First things first, STEMbox Step 1 gives emphasis to safety and that means putting on the included safety glasses and gloves.
All four of our older kids, ages 11 (girl), 8 (boy), 5 (boy), and 3 (boy) thought this was a really fun activity. We turned this into a family learning experiment and everyone had a great time. I loved the fact that everything from the safety equipment down to the tweezers, petri dish, and wooden probe were all included and the kids loved the hands on learning. Our family gives STEMbox all thumbs up!

I’m a city girl turned country by my awesome husband and we have three busy boys and two darling daughters. I love spending time with my family, reading Karen Kingsbury novels, and catching up with friends while our kiddos have play dates. My kids love science and I homeschool so this would be a nice treat for them.
I loved science and biology in college and it served me well in my careers of nutrition and later, nursing. My dad was a mechanical engineer, so he encouraged learning and studying the STEM subjects. I would really encourage girls with this box and of course boys too!
