Well, the public schools around our area are starting back this week and, now that we’ve had a few days of cooler weather as well, it truly feels like summer is ending.  So now I am really feeling the itch to get all of our kiddos back into learning mode.  Our older two started school a couple weeks ago (part time) and just last week, I’ve bumped their schedule up to full time.  Our 5 (almost 6) year old will be starting up this week as well as I plan to work with our 4 year old son and 4 year old foster daughter.  I always try to lag a little with the younger ones and encourage as much play time as possible because, even though I want to feel accomplished by having bookwork done, I feel it’s vitally important to foster the love of learning in all of our kiddos first and foremost.  One way I do that is by including games and hands on manipulatives into our routines.  For that, I love to turn to Learning Resources and their amazing selection of high quality products.

Learning Resources ~ Back To School With Their Learning Essentials Counterpillar & 120 Number Board

For a fun way to get even the youngest of learners working on their numbers, colors, and fine motor skills, the Learning Essentials™ Counterpillar is the perfect tool.  This friendly caterpillar boasts bright colors that draws attention quickly.  Kids can slide the colorful beads as they practice counting or even colors.  With 20 beads total, it’s a great resource for the beginner counters and I even do some simple math on it with the kids too.  I also really like that the base of the Counterpillar has the numbers 1 through 10 printed right on it so the kids learn to associate oral numbers with their written counterpart.  Measuring in at 11½”L x 8″H, it’s easy to use and the base is nice and sturdy for play.

Next, for a great tool for extended number learning, I turned to the Learning Essentials™ 120 Number Board Game.  Also a new 2016 Learning Resources product, this is geared for ages 6+.  However, I do use with our 4 year old as well.  This board can be utilized for building, counting, and discovering about numbers 1-120.  It’s been a really great visual when teaching skip counting!  The board is double sided with one side featuring the numbers and the other side offers a blank grid.  Along with the game board comes 180 plastic tiles which includes transparent blanks in pink and green.  Measuring in at 12″W x 14″H, this a generous size board that our kids have been enjoying daily.

Thank you for sharing Learning Resources as a great source for teaching tools! I have a 3yo and am planning to homeschool him so I love hearing or reading about what works for other families! I think my little would love that number board game as well! He has been so interested in numbers since we added a clock to his room!

I love Learning Resources–they have such creative items for teaching. The Counterpillar reminds me of the old abacus counting device! We just had flash cards so I know these would really make the numbers come alive and keep their interest more than just memorizing.

  • I always do my best to choose educational toys! These look great! I also use my psych and child development knowledge to try and avoid anything that could be remotely harmful to the psyche. LOL

My son loves his Lab set from Learning Resources. Other thing which we would like is Gears! Gears! Gears!® Motorized Spin & Glow Building Set.
