For those of us who own pets and love them dearly, it can be tough to resist the temptation to spend big on them. But did you know that Americans are currently spending over $50 billion on their pet’s needs and wants each year?

Just because you want to save some money, it doesn’t mean you can’t fulfill your pets needs, on the contrary. First of all, you can use coupons to get the necessary food and housing on a budget – try checking out Discountrue.com for promos for Kohl’s or PetSmart. Still, there are many other ways that can help you slash the expenses so read on:

1. Rescue a Pet Instead of Buying One While: some people simply prefer to buy from a breeder, the frugal pet owner is able to rescue an animal and save hundreds of dollars in the process. In many instances, you’ll be able to take an animal for a fraction of the cost of a breeder and enjoy the feeling that comes from saving an animal that was facing euthanization.

2. Buy Generic Flea Protection

You do not necessarily have to shell out for name brand flea protection such as Frontline for your pets. I switched away from Frontline a few months back and haven’t looked back. All you need to do is purchase flea protection that has the same active ingredient. Read the label before making a purchase and be sure to buy flea protection for your pet that is rich in fipronil. You will find out that similar products can be purchased for half the price of name brand ones!

3. Shop Around For A Veterinarian

If you are not satisfied with the services that your vet is providing or their pricing points, take a moment to shop around in your area. When a vets services become excessively pricey or they start to use your pets visits as a reason to push for expensive tests and procedures, this is usually a sign that you will be able to save more money elsewhere by switching vets.

4. Think Twice About Buying Insurance

Buying pet insurance seems like a smart idea, until something goes wrong and you realize that your furry friends ailment is not covered under your current policy. Do not purchase health insurance for your pet unless you are 100 percent certain that the services you need will be covered. Read the terms and conditions of your agreement very carefully before you sign on the dotted line.

5. Preventive Medicine

Focusing on saving up for a rainy day when it comes to your pets health ignores the fact that it is better to keep your pet from getting sick in the first place. Practice preventive medicine now, so that you can avoid costly illnesses later on. Give your pet just as much food as they need and sufficient exercise and both you and your furry friend will be happy!

Love this!! I especially love the idea of adopting instead of going through a pet store or breeder!! Takes more puppies out of pounds and put more mills out of business!!

I think the preventative care is a good tip. I think that’s a good tip for us as people also. We could save on medical bills that way.

Very good points. Generic is just as good for pets as for people.

These are very good points! Lucky for me, I don’t have to do anything about fleas. We just don’t have fleas in the desert.

Great tips. I especially like how you start out with adoption. You can find any breed you may be partial to at some adoption shelter . Pets are FOREVER ( their whole lives) and like any other living thing grow old. More need not to abandon when they are old or lose interest.
I make a lot of catnip toys myself for the cats. You can grow catnip easily and it dries great. Cheap and effective!
