does nutrisystem really work? yes and no

I am a Nutrisystem Nation blogger. I am provided with a Nutrisytem plan in return for regular updates. All opinions are my own.

Ryan has been on Nutrisystem for about 18 months, and he has lost over 60 pounds. I’ve shared his journey a lot, but I’ve avoided writing about my own experience. I have lost about 20 pounds myself. While not nearly as impressive as his results, it’s been a clear visual change in me because I am only 5’1″. I personally am not on Nutrisytem, so I was thinking it wasn’t very relevant. However, I got thinking about how almost all of my readers are moms. In most cases, they have a spouse and children living at home, who need to eat food outside of the Nutrisystem plan that the adult chooses.

Nutrisystem family results

Sorry for the blurry “before” picture. Ryan was great at avoiding full-body shots before his weight-loss so they were very few and far between.

So, I think my experience is relevant to those interested in Nutrisystem because it shows that the lifestyle changes of Nutrisytem can positively influence the entire household.

A few of the ways that my boyfriend being on Nutrisytem has helped me:

  1. He learned about protein, fiber and calories so I did too. I read labels now, and I didn’t before. I switched to better salad dressings, lower calorie spreads, lower calorie bread with more fiber, sugarfree syrup, and other minor switches that can add up to a significant calorie difference over the course of a week.
  2. He has to buy grocery store foods for snacks – primarily lean meat, low-fat dairy or fruit. I’ve started snacking in those same categories.
  3. When we leave the house, Ryan takes Nutrisystem entrees with him so that he doesn’t break his plan. As a result, when I’m with him I also bring along a healthy snack or meal so that we don’t have to stop anywhere. Jut avoiding junk food while traveling or on the road is a great lifestyle improvement.
  4. He shared his experiences with me. For example, when he explained how he doesn’t have to feel FULL at each meal setting to avoid getting hungry again by the next meal time, that helped me to realize I was overeating during meals.
  5. Watching his self-discipline with his eating has made me want to eat better too. I didn’t want to eat poorly in front of him while he was doing so well.

I don’t share these things to pat myself on the back. Ryan has absolutely done more work than I have – after all, his results are 3x better than mine! Still, I think it says a lot for Nutrisytem that his lifestyle change has helped me, too. For those of you who are married and/or have children who feel that your whole family could benefit from lifestyle change, don’t exclude Nutrisystem simply because it’s a plan for one person. The impact can still spread to others. I also think it shows how much of a lifestyle change our household has made, which will increase his odds of maintaining after ending the meal plan.

This is so true!! When one member makes healthier choices it tends to rub off and benefit the other!! Which is awesome!! Everything is so much easier when you can kind of work it with each other too 🙂

It’s true that usually when one family member makes healthier food choices, it carries on to other members of the family. It’s to support each other. WTG, Ryan!

I think Ryan has done a terrific job, as you have. You have been a huge support system for him. Making better choices kind of does affect the whole family. Snacking, and reading labels had to have made a difference for you too I have to say, you do look teerrfic, and 20 pounds is nothing to sneeze at especially for someone of your height. It shows you have have shaped up. You two make such a charming couple.

You have both done great! Anything that gets you closer to healthy eating a plus.

That is a great testament for Nutrisystem and how it does help the whole family. My husband was eating better than I was when I met him. Since then I started eating better. It is about the best part bringing all the others up to that level.

What an inspiring experience, I have loved being able to read about his journey with Nurtisystem! I definitely can see how him being on this diet could rub off on you as well, and it is such a great thing! 🙂 As a family we are all connected, whether we think about it or not. I do know that my husband gained weight all the times that I was pregnant, and his body building influence has always kept me on track as well. Thank you so much for sharing!
