Today PetSmart® shared some news about how they are going to help pets in need. Their new program is called Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™. This new program was announced to celebrate PetSmart’s 30 year anniversary. Through the program, PetSmart will be donating one free meal to a pet in need for every bag of cat or dog food purchased online or at any of the 1,500 PetSmart locations in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. The program will last from March 1st through December 31st 2017.
When you shop at PetSmart, you don’t have to do anything special to assist with the donation. PetSmart simply keeps track of each bag of cat or dog food purchased and donates one meal per bag! It’s that simple. Feed your own pets, and help those who need a meal.
My carefree pug, Frank.
PetSmart expects to donate over 60 million meals in total. That will make a huge difference in the lives of so many pets. In fact, this will be PetSmart’s largest philanthropic campaign yet!

I can’t imagine how heartbreaking it would be to have a pet that you love but are struggling to feed. I know that many shelters and humane societies are constantly seeking donations to help feed the pets they are caring for as well. Did you know that up to 7 million pets enter shelters every year across North America? Taking care of that many pets requires a significant amount of food. No pet deserves to go hungry, so I absolutely love that PetSmart has started this program. PetSmart Charities is the leading funder of animal welfare in North America, they have donated about $300 million to date, to help pets in need!

PetSmart even put together a video to help explain the program and to get you feeling warm and fuzzy about helping other pets. My heart had melted about mid-way through. I know I am biased, but seriously the pug in this video is too cute!
I absolutely love when brands make giving back extremely simple. For the rest of 2017 we get to go about buying food for our pets and helping others in need without any extra effort! Nothing to remember to do, just buy pet food at PetSmart as usual!

60 million meals, wow! I think it’s great that they’re doing something that counts to celebrate their anniversary. Of course they also get positive publicity from it too, but they deserve it!

I love this program! If I only had a dog this is the food that I would buy for it.

this is a good thing the company is doing…. Hope some of the food is going to food banks

I like how Petsmart participates in this. It used to be here in town twice per month people could get dog or cat food from the food bank. It is now controlled by one of the shelter due to politics. A friend runs a shelter and these type of programs really help. One in 5 people are food insecure, imagine this…. some folks who use Meals on Wheels or other programs need to go without in an attempt to feed a companion animal, sometimes the only living thing who loves them. Kudos to Petsmart, I hope it trickles down to people too and not just shelters. The need is great. Sorry to rant.

Go to Walmart. buy a bag for half, and buy two. donate a WHOLE bag to your local shelter.
