As I have mentioned in previous posts, in order to help my children self regulate their strong emotions we have a calm down area in our home. Within that calm down area are small fidget toys, stuffed animals, a big gel tile, and some lavender essential oil soaked rice bags. The tent provides a bit of privacy as well as visual and auditory shut out from the rest of the house’s hustle bustle.
One of the most important things we have in the calm down area is a timer from the Therapy Shoppe. The BIG Time To Go timer has been so helpful for our kids to use. My 3 year old daughter has no issue cranking the timer to the usual 5 minute mark.
There is a stand on the back to keep the timer visual as well as a magnet on the back in case you need to stick it to the fridge or a filing cabinet within an office. My son is pretty articulate with timing and how long something takes. What makes this timer so amazing is the visual red area of time left. 
As the timer descends both my 3 year old and 5 year old are able to notice that their time is lessening as well as the more red there is the more time it will take. The Big Time To Go timer also has an alerting but gentle ringing once the time is up. When using a calm down tool in our calm down area our general rule is chose one toy, and set the timer for five minutes. Once the timer is up we put away the tool and come out to talk about what was so upsetting to begin with.
