Every October, we see a lot of pink. Everyone recognizes the pink ribbon and that it promotes breast cancer awareness. As a nurse, I have lots of scrub tops that have pink ribbon patterns and my watch face has a pink ribbon. I wear these things year round, not just in October. Pink Ribbons hold a special meaning for me because I associate them with three special women in my life. My grandma fought breast cancer for 11 years before losing her battle. My aunt fought breast cancer and is now cancer free. Finally, my coworker and friend fought breast cancer and is now cancer free as well.

Last October I happily partnered with Carpet One Floor & Home for the first time to showcase their pink ribbon welcome mats. This year, I get to once again showcase these beautiful welcome mats that support a great cause. For each $24.99 ($34.99 CDN) mat sold, 25 percent of the proceeds directly support the five-star rated Breast Cancer Research Fund. The 2017 pink ribbon mat collection features 18 designs, including interior design experts Melissa Davis and Lisa Mende, who pull from their personal experience to create dramatic, impactful mats that fit any home decor. Graphic design artist Justin Niederkorn, a senior designer for an international non-profit agency, also tapped his artistic talent and love for the women in his life, to create a mat that graphically tells the important story of a breast exam. Mikayla Chandler, a Savannah College of Art & Design advertising and illustration sophomore, created a powerful image of lines that seem almost inter-connected, and resemble the shape of a breast, swoop of a cup and wisps of hair. The two graphic designers have created edgy and thought-provoking artwork that add to the fashionable and functional collection.

The mat is not only pretty, it is functional. It is comfortable under foot, sturdy and now after having last year’s mat for a year, I can say that it holds up wonderfully to daily traffic, as it spent all year in front of my kitchen sink. It is easy to clean off with a swipe of my vacuum – and I appreciate that the edges do not get sucked into the vacuum.
