Thank you to iHealth for sending a thermometer in exchange for this feature post.

Both of my children were sick last weekend. It started with my son and soon my daughter got it too. A nasty stomach bug. Now that both kids are feeling better I thought I would write a post about My Top 5 Things To Have On Hand When Your Child Is Sick.

It seems like kids never get sick at ‘convenient’ times. If it’s late at night, early in the morning or you are at home by yourself, you don’t want to be running to the store! Having these things on hand and ready to go will make life with a sick child (or children) just a little bit easier.

Number 1: Pedialyte/Gatorade/Powerade – if the child has a high fever, is vomiting or has diarrhea (or worse, both) it’s good to have some electrolyte replacement ready to go, stocked in your cupboard.

Number 2: Ibuprofen & Tylenol (appropriate for your child’s age/weight) – if the child has a high fever or is in a lot of pain you’ll want to have these in the cupboard ready to go. I also have a second set in my diaper bag – just in case.

Number 3: Clorox or Lysol Wipes – as a nurse I know how important hand washing is, but another thing that can help control the spread of the illness is cleaning surfaces that your child has touched with antibacterial wipes to help kill the germs.

Number 4: Extra Set of Large, Clean Sheets (actually 2 extra sets) – it seems like when our kids get sick we move to the living room to rest and watch TV to keep their mind off of how yucky they feel. I like to cover the couch in a large fitted sheet and the living room rug with a large flat sheet. Then the germs are a little more contained, you can easily toss the sheets in the wash and throw on a new sheet if/when a mess happens.

Number 5: Thermometer – We just got the iHealth Digital Medical Infrared Forehead Thermometer, and were using it within days of it arriving. This thermometer is suitable for the whole family, baby through adults. It’s super easy to use, just three steps: Hold, Aim & Press. You get your reading in just 1 second. It uses an ultra-sensitive infrared sensor to collect more than 100 data points per second from the forehead. It is non-invasive, you don’t need to touch the child at all, so you don’t need probe covers. It features a large backlit LED screen that displays the reading in bright white light that you can see clearly even in total darkness. A final great feature is that it doesn’t beep (who wants to wake a sleeping, sick child?!), it has a gentle vibration to alert when a reading is completed.

That’s it, My Top 5 Things To Have On Hand When Your Child Is Sick. Tell me in the comments: what would be on your top 5?

These are wonderful suggestions and tips! It is so sad when there is a sick child in the house and they aren’t
able to express the depths of their pain.

This is a great list of things to have on hand when your little is sick! All of these things are definitely a must and help so much! The only other thing I would add is a humidifier, they help so much with breathing when they have a cold!
