A couple months ago, we switched churches.  Shortly after we started attending our new church, they hosted a family game night.  Since we were wanting to meet other church members and get integrated, we went.  And we were so glad we did!  We had a ton of fun.  We spent the night learning a new group game called Codenames.  The entire family had so much fun that I had to get my hands on the game for our own collection.  So I reached out to Czech Games and they partnered with me so I could help spread the word.

Czech Games Codenames Board Game

Upon further research, I learned that there are actually multiple versions of Codenames!  That first night, we played Codenames Board Game.  But there’s also a Codenames Pictures Board Game as well as a Codenames Duet.

Codenames Board Game

While all three versions are good, I’m going to focus on the version that we started with, Codenames Board Game.   Codenames is a social word board game with a simple premise and challenging game play that makes it extra special.  You can play with as few as 4 players but larger groups work well too if you want to play with bigger teams.

It’s a fast paced, great party game that’s sure to keep the whole family entertained.  Because the cards are arranged differently every time, there’s endless play value as no two games are ever the same.

The game starts as two rival spymasters discover the secret identities of 25 agents. Their teammates know the agents only by their codenames, the names listed on the cards.

Pay attention as The Spymaster gives out a one word clue along with a number that can point to multiple words on the table. Teammates must try and decipher the clue and guess the words of their agents while avoiding those that belong to the opposing team.

Remember, pay close attention to clues and the spymaster but watch out and always avoid the assassin!  One wrong guess will mean the end of the line for your team!

This game works great with 4 players if you prefer to guess without help or you can add more players if you prefer a lively discussion.

Our Thoughts On Codenames Games

While some of the kids prefer the picture version, my favorite is still the original Codenames Board Game.  However, they are all fun.  Codenames Duet is especially great if you’re looking for a two person game.  We actually had some friends over who went out and purchased the game immediately after playing it here for the first time!  It’s truly that great of a game!  Our family is still playing it almost daily and we’ve had it for several weeks now.
