I hadn’t heard of Aldi until about a year and a half ago when our friend mentioned the store to us. I had started to read up about using coupons, but didn’t really “get” it yet and I was frustrated with how much we were spending on groceries. I learned that Aldi is a store that cuts corners in unique ways, to help save money. One of the ways is by offering unique brands of food that aren’t found in most regular stores. They also ask you to either bring your own bags, or pay .10 per (big) bag. They also require that you insert a quarter onto a gadget that attaches to their carts, before it will unlock from the chain of carts. When you’re done shopping, you get the quarter back when you return the cart. This means they don’t have to hire someone to go wrangle in the carts, because people return them to the proper place. It also means that carts aren’t stolen which saves the company money as well.

Aldi doesn’t accept coupons. Now that I’ve fully grasped the concepts behind successful couponing, I’ve found that I can get some items cheaper at other grocery stores, after coupons than I can at aldi without coupons. However, there are some items that are at unbeatable everyday prices at aldi, even compared to the after coupon price at other stores. For example, they have great sales on produce and great everyday prices on produce as well. In the 6+ months that I’ve been using coupons and paying attention to sale cycles and prices, the cheapest i’ve seen green onions at my grocery store is .99. At aldi, the everyday price is .79. Aldi also has great prices on items that are hard to find coupons for, such as trash bags and toilet paper.

One item that is difficult to save money on even with coupons is alcohol. During the holidays many people enjoy relaxing with family and a glass of wine and cheese. At aldi, their wine prices start at just 4.99 making them super affordable. They have great prices on items to pair with wine too, such as their Creamy Havarti (2.99) and edenvale honey coat cheese (1.99) cheeses. Ryan and I aren’t too experienced in wine pairing, so we went along with aldi’s recommendation to pair the villa maliziaa pinot grigio wine (4.99) with their cheeses, seems how we are both fans of a wide variety of cheeses.

We were very pleased with the combination. I’ve only tried wine a few times but hadn’t found them to taste very good though I knew that wine can work much better with certain foods than others so I could have been trying the wrong foods with the wine. I’d definitely recommend checking out aldi’s if you’re looking to entertain your adult guests this season. If you don’t think that an aldi is in your area, make sure to check online. Before our friend told us about the store, I had not heard of it. When he drove with us to the store, I was surprised to find out that we regularly drive on the road the store was on, we just didn’t pay attention to the sign or building, yet there it was.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of ALDI and received a gift certificate to facilitate my review.
