I remember being a kid and walking into the video game aisle and seeing one of my favorite cartoon characters on a game only to discover that the game wasn’t available in the game system that I owned so I couldn’t get it. Mickey fans will be thrilled to hear that Disney Epic Mickey 2 is available for Wii, Wii U, xbox 360, PS3, pc and 3DS! The game include characters that kids are already familiar with as well as a few new ones. Oswald runs around being controlled by a computer if you’re playing alone, or if you want to play with a friend they get to control him. Actions that you take in the game effect game play down the road. For example, if you are overly harsh to characters by jumping on their heads too much they will be hesitant of you instead of trusting. There are hidden treasures to be found along the way so if you find yourself replaying old levels you’ll likely discover something new the second time around. The game is filled with bits and pieces of Disney history such as really old Disney characters and theme parks. These aspects will be appreciated for their uniqueness by young kids but also by adult Disney fans who remembered these aspects of Disney. This game would be a great gift idea for Disney fans young and old, and fans of the first Epic Mickey.

Another Disney gift idea is a membership to Club Penguin. Club Penguin is a really popular MMO that is targeted at kids ages 6-14 but can be played by all ages. If parents are concerned about their children’s actions online, they can find comfort in the safety measures that club penguin has in place. For example, when a child signs up for an account they have to enter their parents email address. The site will email the parents a link to confirm the account to allow their children to play. They also are given the option to let their children only use “ultimate safe chat” where they can only chat with others by using a list of phrases that are pre-selected for them. This means they can’t type out anything they please such as their name, age location or other information that you don’t want them sharing. For older kids who you can trust, you have the option of letting them use free chat where they can type as they please.

I played around on the club penguin site a bit and was impressed by the games available. At the beginning they all seem really easy to me, of course. However, as I keep playing they gradually get harder until they seem tricky to me as an adult. I like how they slowly build up so that regardless of your skill level you will be able to be successful early on and then feel challenged.

The paid membership includes extra games, themed events, and unique activities. It also includes special access and priority server access and new things for your children to discover each week. You can pay monthly or in 6 month or 12 month chunks. The monthly membership is cheaper if you purchase 6 months at a time or 12 months at a time. It would be a nice gift for kids who have enjoyed the free version of club penguin or who just enjoy playing online games.
