If you were a reader of my blog back in early May, then you probably remember Chico bag. I reviewed their vita and sling styles of their awesome reusable shopping bags. If you weren’t around or don’t remember you can see that review here. They are a great company for regular reusable bags, and now they have produce bags! This review was suppose to happen about a month and a half ago, but due to the shipping issues I had at my apartment complex, this package was returned and then had to be resent out and all kinds of heaches. However, Becca from chico bag has been very patient and was willing to reship which was great.
I’ll be honest and will say that I don’t buy as much fresh produce as I should. This is something I’ve been looking into though. I love fruits and veggies, but usually when we do buy them we buy stuff that is already packaged like a bag of potatoes, a head of lettuce which is bagged, a bag of apples, etc. However, I would like to buy more organic food and get to more farmers markets, so I was still interested in reviewing these for future use. The produce bags come in three different types. The types are made of different materials, making them appropriate for different foods.
I was sent the starter kit for produce bags. The starter it includes one of each type of produce bags. These bags are huge – easily twice the size of a regular produce bag. One bag type is a hemp-cotton blend, which is designed to be used with leafy green produce because it is designed to absorb extra moisture and restrict airflow. The second type of bag is the repete bag which is a mesh material that is great for squash, broccoli, celery and carrots because restricts airflow and locks in moisture. The mesh repete bag is designed for apples, oranges, potatoes, etc because it allows the gases that are produced to cause ripening, to escape.
These bags are great because they are designed to optimize freshness, when being used with the proper types of produce based on the bags material, but they are also much larger than traditional produce bags, and they reduce the environmental damage that is done each time you don’t use a disposable produce bag.
