One of the downsides of living in Michigan is we don’t have much of a spring. In mid April, it snowed. Two weeks later, it was 80. We’ve still been going back and forth between having low 50’s weather to high 70’s, with little in between. Our apartment is on the third floor, so on the hot days, the apartment gets unbearably hot. We are blessed to have central air, but we try to use it as little as possible because it’s expensive to run. For me, i don’t mind being a little over warm during the day. However, when it comes to falling asleep, I can’t be uncomfortably warm. To make matters worse, I have a slight addiction to sleeping with a fleece blanket, which makes me even MORE too warm than I would be otherwise. I’m definitely a pillow flipper, always searching for the cooler side of the pillow. This time of year, I flip it too quickly, so the entire pillow ends up being too warm. At least, that’s what I used to do, before I discovered how amazing the polar pillow is. The polar pillow is a unique pillow with gel inside that keeps the topside of the pillow cool – always! It really does work too. The bottom, white portion of the pillow is just regular ole fluff like in any other pillow. Then the top layer is blue and has gel inside, and then another top layer of blue. You don’t have to do anything weird like put the pillow in a cold place, or ‘prep’ the pillow in any way. It just stays cool all the time! There were a few downsides for me personally. Mainly the fact that the pillow is too thin for me. I like thick pillows, so I tried using polar pillow on top of another thin pillow to make them a good height for me. However, the gel is very heavy so it would pull the pillow down until it fell off of the top pillow. The other con is the pillow is extremely heavy for a pillow, so it isn’t real ideal for traveling. Also, I wish the gel layer was quilted or sectioned off in some way, so that the gel would stay evenly distributed throughout the pillow, as it tends to all fall into one area. Of course, shaking the pillow around into shape corrects the positioning of the gel so it’s not a big deal. The benefit of a consistently chilled pillow definitely outweigh the cons though. I’ve adjusted to sleeping with my arm under the pillow which raises its height, and I fall asleep much easier and feel as if my entire body maintains a more comfortable temperature with a chilled pillow. I have a bit of a pillow obsession and am always looking for a new favorite pillow. When this one arrived, Ryan laughed at me a little, like he always does when I get a new pillow. Yet, he’s been caught sleeping with this one if he goes to bed and I’m still up. I think that means it’s a definite winner.
