Max’s Magical Journey by Annette Kelly ropes readers into the life of Max, a young pup. Children can relate to his adventurous dreams and are encouraged to participate in the story by answering questions inserted though out the book. Max asks his readers what they would do in similar situations. It helps readers emphasize and use their imaginations.
My 5 year old Nephew, Gage, loved Max’s Magical Journey. Since he lived in Arizona the first 5 years of his life, he could relate to the prickly cactus thorns and even wanted to stop Max from touching them as soon as he knew Max was thinking about touching one. I do believe; however, that even if the setting had been in another location other than Arizona, Gage would have enjoyed the book just as much. Gage particularly enjoyed the questions throughout the story. He was engaged in Max’s adventures and participated in the story by answering the questions the book posed after each of Max’s adventures. I could tell that Gage wasn’t just coming up with a quick answer so we could get to the next adventure; he was really putting some thought into his answers and was putting himself in Max’s place.
Both of us highly recommend this book. I’m interested to see if Gage comes up with different answers when we read the book again tonight. My Mom’s dog, Rudy, was on the bed next to Gage as we were reading about Max’s Magical Journey last night so I’m anticipating that he will likely join us for tonight’s reading session also. I think I even caught Rudy looking at the pictures a couple of times!

Hello, my name is Laurie. My family and I live near the Oregon coast. When we aren’t at work, in school, or on the volleyball court, we enjoy traveling, cheering for our favorite sports teams, playing outdoors, and checking off items on our bucket list. We are lucky in that both sets of our parents, as well as our siblings and their families, live within an hour of us.
