When spending time with kids, I try to let go of my own preferences for how we spend our time and just follow their lead and do what interests them. I think it’s easier to connect with kids and make them feel “seen” if you join their world instead of having them tag along in yours. So when it comes to toys, books and movies I just go with the flow and don’t try to steer them towards things that interest me as well. When I saw the cover and summary for Horrid Henry, the movie, I thought it would be a movie that would interest the kids but I didn’t think it would be my thing. I didn’t mind, as I wasn’t out to entertain myself.

Then, I looked around on youtube and was able to find a movie trailer and I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it would be kind of a “bathroom humor” and other obtuse humor that children find hilarious and would enjoy but wouldn’t be my cup of tea. The trailer didn’t give me that impression at all though. Instead, it explains the story line without any of the blunt type humor that I was expecting  Henry is a boy who likes to pull tricks and pranks, and is just kidn of known as being a naughty kid. He hates boring things like his teacher, school and homework so he finds more entertaining things to do like using spy gear to get his hands on other peoples snacks, getting back at his ‘perfect” brother and of course, being a rockstar. He finds out that is school is going to close – and that all of the children who go there will be forced to pay to go to brickhouse school – which is run by a mean, money-greedy man in a building that seems at least twice as boring and awful as his regular school. So he decides to team up with some kids to try and keep the school from closing. The trailer gave me the impression that I wouldn’t mind this movie myself. It has lots of pranks and tricks involving slime, which I knew the kids would enjoy and I was right. It was a nic movie for watching as a family because the kids  really liked it and I was fairly entertained as well. There is some slapstick humor but it was the amount you would expect in a childrens movie, the amount of it didn’t bother me. I can’t really ask more than that out of a kids movie. It runs for about an hour and a half, so it doesn’t drag on.

Horrid Henry will be available starting tomorrow, March 12th thanks to Kaboom Entertainment. At walmart, it will come with a special slime pack that kids will love. Or even adults – who doesn’t like slime? It comes in a really unique package so the case is the size of a regular dvd case but it includes the slime and the cd in it. We had an extra cd case laying around so we have opted to store the dvd in that instead of trying to reuse the packaging because it jsut didn’t seem like it would hold up to being reused as it is thin plastic unlike most dvd cases. I didn’t want to open up the slime with two kids whiel at someone elses house, so I left the slime at home but I’m sure it would be lots of fun to play with, people who aren’t keen on messes might opt to use it as an outdoor activity once the weather breaks.
