*I was sent dry dog food from Nature’s Logic in return for this post. All opinions are my own.

Since getting two dogs in July, one of the most overwhelming and confusing decisions to make is what to feed them. There is an endless amount of information on the internet about what foods are and are not good for dogs and it can be hard to compare as an individual. I’ve learned that the Dog Food Advisor site is a great resource that is well respected by amost everyone. It rates dog food on a 5 star scale and then goes into detail about why the food was given that rating, with specific information about any ingredients that may be controversial.

When I first got the dogs they were both on a very low quality food that I knew wasn’t healthy. They also were very itchy and exhibiting signs of an allergy. I know that food allergies are common in dogs and upgrading to a better food can help. So I was also hoping to reduce their allergy symptoms. Other than that, I didn’t really know where to start. I had read that using the dog food advisor site to find 4 star foods or higher is a good place to start. Nature’s Logic is rated at 5 stars on the dog food advisor site so it immediately grabbed my attention based on that. Other facts about Nature’s Logic dog food that I thought were awesome include:

  • It contains no man-made, chemically synthesized vitamins, minerals or amino acids. In fact, they are the ONLY dog food line in existence that does not use chemically-synthesized ingredients!
  • It contains no chemical preservatives, artificial flavorings or colorings.
  • It contains no corn, wheat, soy, rice, potato, tapioca, or glutens.
  • Their ingredients are designed to be highly digestible by dogs
  • They include probiotics and enzymes to aid in digestion.

I couldn’t think of any reason to not give this food a try. In the past when I switched dog foods, my dogs wouldn’t eat the food unless I mixed it with the food they were used to eating. To my surprise, they were happy to make an immediate switch to Nature’s Logic, no mixing required.

NaturesLogicKibble

The kibble is very small in size which is great for my 8 and 9 year old pugs who don’t like to chew on large or hard things like younger and/or bigger dogs. They are both pretty slow while eating larger kibble so I was happy to see that they seemed to be able to eat this quicker.

NaturesLogicChickenFranknature's logic beef dog food

Both of my dogs seemed to prefer the Nature’s Logic chicken dog food variety over the beef but they consumed both varieties without complaint. This actually lead me to realize that both dogs also seem to prefer chicken flavored treats over beef ones, so I think its just their taste preference. In the past when switching (even with mixing) both Frank & Beans would have upset tummies for a few days. When we switched to Nature’s Logic we didn’t have any problems with their bathroom habits at all and it seemed to decrease the frequency of constipation which was a problem we had on the food they were on previously.

While they did have some allergy symptoms while on this food, they did seem to reduce in severity. Short of paying for an in depth allergy test for them, I don’t have any way of knowing what their allergy is to so the remaining symptoms could be caused by something environmental like grass or weeds in our yard – I don’t know. I’m thankful that the symptoms are reduced as their itching and paw licking is at a much more manageable level now.

In short, I love the ingredients, my dogs like the taste, it seemed to reduce allergy symptoms & my pugs’ tummies agree with it. What’s not to love?

  • My dogs also like the smaller kibbles. One of my dogs has severe food allergies, so we have her on a no grain, soy or corn diet. It really limits us.

  • I’ll have to check this brand out. I love using Dog Food Adviser to check out foods, it’s a great resource. We’re very careful about what we feed our dogs, and this sounds like a great brand overall.

  • I’ve never seen this food. I only have a cat, but I don’t remember seeing this here locally. I’ll tell my neighbor. It looks like a great formula. Thanks.

  • Good to know, my son may be getting a dog in November!
    thanks,
    Mitch

  • That sounds very healthy and nutritious!

  • Kelly – Nature’s Logic also makes dry kibble and canned food as well as raw for cats. You can check it out at http://www.natureslogic.com. If you are having trouble finding it locally there are quite a few online retailers that sell our products. You can find a list of them under our Store Locator on the website.

    Thanks for the post Emily!

  • in response to the allergy issue you were experiencing……try a different protein source. They have a great Salmon Duck kibble that is great! There is Venison….and Sardine that is also fabulous. My dogs don’t do well on Chicken. I use Nature’s Logic Raw….and can products also! I love the quality of this company’s products.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve heard that beef and chicken are more likely to be allergy sources than fish or non-chicken poultry so I’ll keep an eye out for the salmon duck kibble to try. I tried some duck treats a couple of weeks ago and my dogs just went nuts for them so that’s a good sign too. 🙂

  • I recently read your review of Natures Logic. I feed only Natures Logic to my English Bulldog. I too was very worried about the price as I was paying $55 per bag from a local feed store which is the easiest way to find NL. However, I got creative. I found who the wholesale distributor of NL was in our area (Canton, Oh) and discovered it was a company called Wholesome Pet Distributors in a small city about 30 miles away. I visited them and discovered that bags are damaged in transit and cannot be sold on retail stores. The damage was almost nonexistent and was often a chunk of the waxy outside bag missing. When this happens, the distributor sells the bags to the public at the following prices. $5 for a 4.4lb bag, $10 for a 15lb bag, and $25 for a 26.4lb bag. This was for EVERY dog food the supplied which included Innova, Orijen, Royal Canin and all the other ultra premium dog foods. So I was able to get 2 25lb bags (1 beef, 1 lamb, and a 15lb bag of duck/salmon) for $60. This would have cost me $145 at my store. Plus according to the bag, the food is good until September of 2015. No worries of it not getting eaten. This may be something to look into.

I also recieved a sample of this food. Unfortunately it wasn’t a good experience. Although I added a very tiny amount to my dogs regularly dry food, this food gave him gas, diarrhea and bloody stools. It was a terrible 3 days until it passed. It’s not for dogs with sensitive stomachs.
