While a paper shredder may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Christmas gifts, I personally feel that it is a smart gift. There are so many cases of identity theft, credit card theft, and stealing of personal information that shredding bills, credit card statements, bank statements, and other personal paperwork is a really good idea. Shredding this information is a simple step that everyone can easily take to protect themselves.
Our last shredder was a Fellowes and is still working great after three years. It has so many great features and we have had no issues with its shredding abilities. That is, unless you count the time that our third child was about 18 months and was helping my husband. Our little guy was grabbing my husbands garbage pile of paid bills, empty envelopes, and papers and shredding them for him. Well, my husband got a phone call and stepped away from his desk and then I heard the shredder grumble to life again but I could tell that whatever went through this time was pretty thick. I glanced over at our son and he was heading back to my husbands desk to grab the lone paper that was left laying on top. I stopped him from shredding that one but it was already too late for the last bunch. He had just shredded our taxes! We went from disbelief, to shock, to laughter at a situation that couldn’t be changed anyway. Thankfully, our tax guy had another copy at his office and found our whole situation hysterical but we are much more careful about stepping away from any important papers now. Since we do shred a lot of documents, I was thrilled to partner with Fellowes on this review.

Upon opening the box to our Fellowes 73Ci, there was minimal assembly and preparation required. The wheels had to be snapped on to the bottom and the top needed to be placed on. The final prep was inserting a bag into the bin (makes for easier emptying) and adding some oil to the shredder blades (which was included.) Fellowes recommends that you re-oil each time you empty the bin. This step was easy and my husband just ran the bottle twice over the place you insert papers. Then we were all set to test the 73Ci Shredder.
My first impression was that this was a gorgeous, sleek, and sophisticated looking shredder. It is fairly compact but still holds a lot and we shouldn’t need to empty it too often. I was surprised by the weight of this shredder. By lifting it, I can tell it’s a higher quality product than most. Upon testing it out, I loved the touch screen and back lights but the most amazing thing to me was that the 73Ci was fairly quite as it shredded. We loved our old Fellowes shredder but it was pretty loud during use. The new 73Ci is so efficient and quiet. Perhaps the biggest and best feature of the 73Ci, in my opinion, is the safety feature. In the middle of shredding, my husband and I touched near the opening multiple times and the shredder immediately halted. This brings peace of mind to us since we have four young children.
When shredding papers, the 73Ci was able to perform with ultimate speed and efficiency. We shredded a small handful of papers at a time with no problems. Upon inspecting the results, I was pleased with the size of the scraps and the confidence that it would be extremely difficult for someone to find and place the pieces back together. The 73Ci is a great shredder and would make a wonderful gift this holiday season.

You know, after watching the movie Argo, it made me realize just what people could do even after something was shredded. So a criss cross shredder is definitely a great idea!
oh boy, lucky you had an extra copy of your taxes. 🙂 I like that Safe Sense Technology, when I run our older model, I have to shred with little guy gone or down for a nap. I need to upgrade, I have so many boxes of cancelled checks that I need to shred. Adding this model for my office wishlist.
