Like most kids, I started battling acne when I was around 11 years old. I tried creams, masks, spot treatments, washes and pads of all brands and varieties for the next few years. While most of the treatments helped some, none were the magical cure all and I never got anywhere near a perfect complexion. Once I was 16-17 years old the acne calmed down a lot, but since then I’ve continued to struggle with acne around my menstrual cycle. While it’s nice to not have the pimples constantly popping up, I often breakout so much at once, that it takes a couple of weeks for my face to clear up. Then I have about a week of relaxation before the cycle starts again.

The Claro acne clearing device is an over the counter  IPL device that uses light and heat to treat mild to moderate acne. Essentially, the device is put up against the skin and it pulses light and heat in quick, short zaps for six seconds. Each blemish needs to receive two six second treatments, but the device can only do two sets of six second treatments before it will need to cool down. So you can fully treat 1 blemish, or do the first “round” of treatment on two blemishes, then wait for it to cool down and start over. If you have a lot of blemishes, it will take a long time to get around to all the problem spots.

The instruction manuel said to test the Claro device on an area of your forearm, for two 6 second runs, and wait 24 hours. If your arm is red or irritated in that area, you could be a person who is highly sensitive to light/heat who wouldn’t use the device. I did this test and my arm never experienced any redness or problem, so I went ahead and tried it on a blemish on my face. After 24 hours, the blemish had gotten a very deep red, almost maroon color, but the pimple wasn’t smaller or more flat than it had been the day before. So, ultimately it made my acne stand out more and made it harder to cover with concealer or other makeup seems how it was a darker color. I was hoping it was just a fluke, so I tried again on two more zits, but I had the same experience. I continued to try a few more times, and was never able to get the device to shrink my blemishes.
