I have partnered with Apartment Guide to share some ideas for making your apartment eco-friendly in an affordable way. As an Apartment Guide Blog Partner, I will be sharing ideas to make your eco-friendly apartment feel like home. We are hoping to move within a few months and I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about decorating our new space. In the past 3.5 years since I’ve been living away from my parents, I’ve always lived in relatively small living spaces, like most apartment owners. I’m always looking for new ways to organize small spaces and make our lives more functional. A big part of living green is reusing what you already have instead of buying new, and this concept works well for conserving space as well.

For example, instead of buying a new book shelf, you can cut a pallet into pieces to use as a book rack. Or, you can attach a ladder to the back of your bathroom door to use as a towel holder instead of purchasing a towel rack. Ladders can also be hung from the ceiling and used to dry laundry – which is great to not only save money and the environment by avoiding buying a drying rack, but is also green because you aren’t using the dryer more than you have to (and if your apartment has coin operated dryers, it can save $ too!).

Instead of throwing away a pair of old shoes or boots, fill them with potting soil and plant some flowers. Even if you don’t have private outdoor space, you can put the flowers in your windowsill or on a counter.

Women who have tons of shoes (like me!) or purses and can’t seem to get rid of any, can reuse an extra shower tension rod in their closet to hang the purses, or two shower rods (one placed slightly lower, and in front of the other) to hold high heels up off of the floor.

If you don’t happen to have these extra items laying around your place, you can likely pick them up at garage sales or thrift stores for a fraction of what they would cost new.
