Box Tops For Education Collection

Adults understand the connection between having adequate funding and having a great education provided by a school. It’s easy for us to see the benefit of clipping Box Top For Education labels from General Mills products to turn in to the school so that the school gets some money back. Yet, for me at least, I sometimes forget to clip the Box Top before recycling or throwing away the container that has the label on it. I remember being a kid and having classroom competitions to see which classroom could return the most Box Tops in a month. During those competitions, I would always remind my mom, grandma, aunts and anyone else around to clip box tops before tossing the box or bag away. Kids generally have less stress in their lives, so it’s easier for them to remember these things than it is for us adults. Getting your kids excited about collecting Box Tops can help them remind you to clip labels. For teachers, having the competition between classrooms (or even among each individual student, or set groups of students) is an awesome motivator – at least it was for me as a child. If your child’s teacher or school isn’t providing that inspiration for children to remember Box Tops For Education, you can help create it at home.

To get kids excited about Box Tops, I decided to make a special box to keep our Box Tops in. I thought leaving it out on our kitchen counter might help remind me about the Box Tops, and letting kids design the box can get them excited to participate as well. I like to try to turn in our Box Tops often, so I was comfortable selecting a small box which had the added benefit of being able to be wrapped with a single piece of printer paper. If you have a bigger box, you could use gift wrapping paper that is turned inside out to reveal the plain side and let your kids use crayons, markers, colored pencils, paint or even stickers and glitter to decorate it. Here is what our paper looked like after being designed:

Then I simply wrapped it around our box and taped it. At the bottom of the box we had a little extra paper so I simply folded it like you would wrapping paper on a square present.

We had recently purchased several products from Fiber One and Yoplait (among others) that had Box Tops so after finishing our box we went and clipped the box tops that we could reach. Many of our box tops were located at the bottom of boxes or in places that would damage the container, so they need to be cut after the box in empty. For this reason, keeping your Box Tops For Education collection box near your trash can might be a great location to remind you to clip before tossing the boxes out.
