Burga box mac attack dinner

I was sent a Burga Box for review. All opinions are my own.

Ryan grew up with the tradition of being able to choose what to have for dinner on your birthday. Kids could have mashed potatoes and cereal if they wanted! It was the one day a year where anything went in terms of dinner. Of course, as kids get older they tend to be less interested in having a weird combination of foods for dinner and instead just start choosing their favorite restaurant.

Ryan & I almost always eat at home. We go out to eat maybe half a dozen times per year. Typically, our birthdays take up two of those days. This year, we had been pretty busy leading up to Ryan’s birthday. He had requested that instead of going out and doing something (such as a movie) for his special day, that we just stay in so that he could be lazy and relax because he hadn’t had enough down time at home at the time.

I was a little unsure of what to do about his birthday dinner, though. So when I stumbled across Burga Box I was excited. Burga Box is a company that will send you ingredients to make a delicious burger (and sides) at home. Sort of like those subscription services for dinners, except these are all burger based.

I opted to review The Mac Attack Burga Box. These kits are called a feast in a box and they are NOT kidding. Our box says it feeds 2, but it could feed four or more in my opinion.

The Mac Attack burger comes with macaroni and cheese that you fry with additional cheese to place on your burger, plus bacon. It comes with a side of fries (several seasoning options available) and a side of mac and cheese (again several variations available). Plus, coleslaw and baked bean sides.

All of the ingredients come beautifully packaged and nothing in my kit leaked or had other problems. The burgers are sealed tightly in plastic and come already in burger-shapes. Most of the other ingredients (cheese, mac and cheese for the burgers, coleslaw and beans) came in hard plastic white containers. The buns and the seasoning for the burger came in a cardboard box and was near the top of the shipping box so that nothing got smushed or damaged.

Papers come included in the kit that tell you how to prepare each of the main items (mac and cheese side, fries and burger).

The fries took a bit more prep-work than I was expecting. It was rather hectic to try to cook the fries, mac and cheese and the burger all at once. I was worried that I would forget something or let something burn by accident but thankfully it all turned out well. I feel bad that I didn’t get photos of the prep but it was just too much at once. There are a lot more mini-steps than you would usually have at home. For example, first you fry the bacon. Then you use that pan to cook the burger in. In a separate pan, you spoon out some mad and cheese, and add additional cheese to it. You wait for the cheese to melt and the bottom of the mac & cheese to crisp up. Meanwhile you also have to butter and fry the bun to toast it slightly. Then you stack the burger, mac & cheese and bacon on the bun. I was trying to do all of those steps while simultaneously taking care of the side-dishes, and the fries required multiple steps as well. I had three pans frying on the stove top and mac and cheese in the oven, and this was with me opting to not include the baked beans as a side! So cooking the sides first and then just leaving them to warm in the oven would make more sense, I think. Or, cooking with a friend or partner. With it being Ryan’s birthday I didn’t want to make him help me cook.

On this plate you see one of the burgers, about 1/4 of the mac and cheese side and about 1/3 of the fries! Keep in mind that we were also sent baked beans and coleslaw for this dinner that we opted to not eat on this day. So this is why I say this kit could feed more than just 2 people. He only ate about half this plate and he was absolutely stuffed. This photo doesn’t fully ot justice for how TALL the burger was.

Ryan is a big fan of burgers in general and he enjoys homemade ones quite a bit. After eating a few bites of this burger he said “This really tastes like a restaurant burger!” Which I thought was a wonderful compliment for Burga Box. The fries were a big favorite for us, too. We both tend to avoid steak fries or other thick cut-fries so seeing how thick these were was concerning to us at first. Neither of us care for fries that are too soft, and big fries tend to be mushy. However, the garlic parmesan topping was absolutely incredible and despite their thickness, these fries crisped up nicely. I am not much of a burger person myself, but I would absolutely place an order for just these garlic-parmesean fries for myself.

Seeing how good the sides were made us curious about the other varieties, too. For example, their bacon jalapeno mac and cheese, or their pizza fries. They also have a Burga Box of the month if you want to subscribe to check out a new variety each month.

Trying Burga Box really felt like an experience instead of just a meal. It was a fun little activity to explore together and the end result was delicious. It was the perfect way to spend a birthday relaxing at home in a way that still felt unique and special.
