I had never used food trays before trying out the lapper trays from masterbuilt. The closest I had came to using a food tray like the lapper tray would be using a tv tray while being a guest at friends houses. However, my apartment is really small and we have opted to not have a table seems how we don’t have a dining room and it wouldn’t be possible to fit a table in the kitchen. So when I heard about these trays I thought they would be good idea for us, even if the whole claim about being able to tip them to a 65% angle before dishes start to slide, weren’t true. To be honest, I was extremely skeptical about the claims made and probably wouldn’t have accepted these for reviews if it weren’t for the fact that I knew we could use them regaurdless.
I am a bit ashamed to admit how skeptical I was, but I hope that by sharing my skepticism it will make those of you who are really skeptical out there, more apt to believe me when I say – it works! I love using the lapper trays regardless of what we are eating, but these are so handy when you have a regular drinking cup or glass with drink in it, as well as for soups and things that you usually have to be extremity careful with. I never eat ramen noodles or any other soup without grabbing this tray to help me transport my bowl into the next room with me. The secret of course is the grippers that you place the bowl or plate on as well as the gripper where you put your cup. The areas where the grippers sit are slightly indented to help out as well. The gripper is really smooth on the side that goes against the tray and has a texture on the side where the dish sits. The side with texture reminds me a lot of the grippes that you use to open jars or cans that are stuck. So when they first arrived and I felt of the gripper I was even more skeptical. However they really do work great. I sit indian style or sit on a couch and put the tray on my lap and don’t worry about having to hold still or be super careful.
I also love how these trays have a rim around them that is probably 1/2 an inch tall. So if you had a drink or soup that did spill a little bit, there is that rim to keep the liquid on the lapper tray and not spill over.
There are only two things I would like to change about these trays is they seem larger than necessary. Due to my extremely small living space, it is hard to find a place to store the trays due to how long they are. The other thing I would change is the distance from the side of the tray to the area where the bowl sits. If I sit at a table, I put my plate underneath my face, really close to me. I suppose I do this so that in case something falls off of my fork, that it will fall onto the plate instead of the table. However, because the gripper for the plate/bowl is in the middle of the tray, it causes the plate/bowl to be in front of you instead of underneath you. Of course this isn’t a big deal because if something does fall off of a fork it will fall onto the tray still, but it feels a bit unnatural for me to eat with my plate in front of me. However, I have slowly gotten used to it, it just took a bit of adjustment.
As I said these trays have become a part of our meal routine and I am really glad that I got to review them. However there are 3 of us and only 2 trays so I hope to find cash to get two more soon. I would recommend them to anyone who ever eats on the couch or outside so that food has to be walked from room to room. They’d also be great for kids who are still unstable with carrying their plate to the table.
