When a loved one is disabled, or becomes disabled with age, it can be difficult to find a balance between the persons independence and their safety. Particularly with the elderly, it can be hard for them to accept that they are no longer able to simply get in the car and go, like they were used to doing for so many years. If they become reliant on a wheelchair, it can be really difficult to get the person in and out of a car. Ryan’s dad has became wheelchair bound in the last couple of years and it takes several minutes to get him in and out of the car. We wheel the chair to the door he’s going to get in. help him stand, help him walk around the chair and help him sit in the car. Then we close the door and have to disable the wheelchair into small parts so that it can fit into the trunk, shut the trunk and get in our own doors. Then it has to be done again when we get to our destination. If running errands to several places in a day, it can be a lot of work. It would be a lot easier to have a vehicle designed for wheelchair access.
Nmeda is a non profit organization that helps assure quality in wheelchair accessible vehicles and other equipment for the disabled. Nmeda itself doesn’t sell anything, but dealerships can become regular nmeda dealerships or they can become quality assurance program (or QAP) dealers. QAP dealers is the only nationally recognized accreditation program for the adaptive mobility equipment industry.
If you’re looking for a wheelchair accessible vehicle or for adaptive equipment to allow disabled people to drive, check out the list of NMEDA dealers in your area.
I was pleased to learn that there are two nmeda dealerships within 25 miles of me. You can go to nmeda.org and use the locate a dealer page to find a dealership near you.
