Happy earth day! While I think it’s a good idea to be eco-friendly all year long, I think earth day is great because it causes us to reflect on our lifestyles. For us, we are eco-friendly in some ways but have a lot of areas that we could improve on. The biggest barrier that we face is the financial expenses of choosing eco-friendly options. For us, it’s a pain to have to spend 6.00 on store brand garbage bags, so paying lots extra for way less trash bags that decompose earlier isn’t really an option because of our finances. We use reusable grocery bags, reusable sandwich bags and food storage containers and water bottles. Instead of buying paper towels and paper plates, we use regular silverware and towels. Instead of cotton balls or makeup remover wipes, I use knitted scrubbies.
Something that bothers me is the amount of trash that we have. The biggest problem is boxes and envelopes that I get in the mail that contain review items. Some days I get four or five packages that all come in boxes, often with packets of paper (press releases or product catalogs) as well as packing peanuts, paper or bubble wrap. I’m sure I would be horrified to see how quickly it would pile up if I were to put it all in a spare room for even a month instead of burning or throwing it away. I think that if were able to start recycling paper and cardboard that would be a big step for us. I would like to accomplish that before next earth day. Perhaps making my goal public will make me more likely to achieve it. What is your earth day goal?

We are fortunate in that we can recycle…we have a separate bin that gets picked up each week. I’ve never heard of the scrubbies..interesting…or the trash bags that decompose quickly….I’ll have to look for those

I am astounded by the amount of trash that goes out of my house. Unfortunately, we have to go out of our way to recycle since we live in a very rural are. We try to recycle all that we can though.

A few years ago, I committed to recycling my cardboard boxes from blogging. This year I am going to try to bring in my own bags. I simply cannot remember this..I need to have a big sign on my car window or something!
