I know that layaway is a lifesafer for many families during the holiday season. Many people find it hard to budget for the holidays because it's hard to know exactly how much you'll need to spend until you actually start shopping and by then it might be too late if you've already spend the money you would have saved on gifts.
Kmart offers free layaway through november 17th – in the past they charged a $5 service fee but that has been removed for the holiday season! You can shop early and save up as much as needed before December gets here. You can even use layaway online by adding items to your shopping bag. Whether you shop online or in store, you just make your payments once every two weeks and you can pay online or in store with check, cash or debit card.
If you're like me and enjoy shopping at kmart because of the deals they offer then you'll love hearing that when you use layaway, you lock in the price based on what it costs when you add the item to your layaway account! This way you can shop the deals each week as they pop up even if you don't have the money to cover the entire cost of the item upfront. What a great way to shop for holiday gifts! I was checking out the kmart website and found some men's jeans that are on sale for 14.99 (regularly 19.99) but the sale ends on the 16th. So I could add these jeans to my layaway to lock in the $14.99 price. Of course, in a situation like this I would be able to afford the jeans even if they weren't on sale. However, for more expensive items that are deeply discounted, the difference of putting an item on layaway might make the difference as to whether or not I could afford the item.

After checking out this chart that compares kmart layaway to walmart, best buy and toys r us, I'm surprised at how many benefits there are to kmarts layaway over others. No service fee, no minimum value requirement, and the ability to shop online and pick up in store are all benefits that are important to me.
