The sixth annual coins for change program kicked off yesterday. The program allows Club Penguin (the largest online world for kids) to pledge virtual coins in a huge virtual bake sale that will benefit real causes. Club Penguin will donate a million dollars to causes this year, and which charities get selected will be based on users’ votes. Users can bake cookies in-game and buy cookies to help determine where Club Penguin should donate its $1M. Club Penguin has pre-selected three main categories that they will be donating to – providing medical help, building safe places and protecting the earth. However, the users’ actions will determine what percentage of the overall donation total will go to each category.

As an added bonus for players who purchase virtual cookies, they will be able to transform into fun characters for a limited time. Free players will be turned into toy cars, and paid members can turn into reindeer puffles and “frost bites” that allow them to freeze in-world items temporarily.

In the past, Club Penguin has given a total of $9M to charity and this year they will cross the $10M mark.

This is a great way to let your children have fun online while also reminding them that a big part of the holiday season is helping others in need. Doing so in such a fun way is just a nice bonus. This program only runs through January 2nd so hurry and participate while you can.
