I remember being a kid and battery powered toothbrushes first began to get popular (or at least, I first became aware of them) and I wanted one so badly because they seemed so cool. Eventually I did get one for Christmas and was excited to give it a try. Yet, when I went to use it, it just seemed unnatural. The bristles were shaped differently than my old manual toothbrushes, and it just seemed kind of stiff and hard to get in and around the different sides and angles of my teeth with it so my mouth didn’t feel as clean afterwards. I went back to using a manual toothbrush and had continued to do so until I recently was given a chance to try the Arm & Hammer Spinbrush Proclean toothbrush. I thought that it had been so long that perhaps electronic toothbrushes have improved or maybe that one I had tried years ago was just not ideal.
I was driven to try the Spinbrush Proclean because it claims to remove 70% more plaque in hard to reach places than a manual toothbrush. Upon opening the Proclean’s packaging, I checked out the head to discover that there are two main sections, just like most other electronic toothbrushes. The top portion is circular and the bottom half is wedge shaped. The circular area has two different lengths of bristles – the exterior circle is slightly longer and less stiff than the bristles inside of the circle. The wedge portion has bristles that go up and down in length like a zig zag. There are three different colors of bristles, the green being the most stiff, then the blue being in the middle and white being the softest.
When on, the wedge portion goes up and down and the circular part vibrates in place. I’ve been using a manual toothbrush so long that I don’t really think about brushing my teeth I just do it. With this brush I did have to consciously make sure that I covered the top, sides and back of each tooth seems how the movements my arm/hand make are so different than with a manual toothbrush but my mouth felt really clean afterwards. I assume that in time I’ll get so used to using this that I will be brushing my teeth on all surfaces without any thought it just takes a while to adjust. I plan to continue using this toothbrush as I’m happy with it. It’s quite loud so I do shut our bathroom door if Ryan is across the hall sleeping with the bedroom door open.
It comes with a plastic cover that snaps on which I love seems how it’s too large to fit into our toothbrush holder. It comes with batteries already in but I had thrown away the packaging and wasn’t sure what type of batteries it takes and I wanted to include that info in my review so I tried to remove the case to see what batteries are inside and we were only able to open them after using pliers. So it is very very difficult to get the battery case off. It just takes 2 AA batteries which is super convenient for me as I always have those around.
The Spinbrush Proclean retails for around $9 making it very affordable. It would make a nice stocking stuffer to offset all that candy in the stocking.

Lately, I’ve been using some cheaper toothbrushes that I got free at the dentist, and it’s really shown me how much of a different using a good toothbrush can make. I think I’ll have to relegate the cheapies to cleaning duty and get something like this for my teeth!
