My boyfriend Ryan loves learning. He regularly searches the internet to teach him about new topics, facts or even to learn new skills. It’s really incredible how much information is available on the internet if you know how to search and find what you need. He does a great job of teaching himself – even in school he tended to tune out teachers and just read the books and do the homework on his own because that’s how he learns best. So for him, reading articles on the web works fine but for a lot of us, being able to visualize what we are learning about (or hear it spoken) makes it a lot easier to absorb.
Lynda.com is a website that can be accessed by paying for a monthly subscription. They offer tons of video tutorials and training for a wide range of topics. Even for self-taught learners like Ryan, having all of the information composed into a video can be quicker and easier than having to read a book or article. Most of the videos focus on business, marketing or design related jobs but there are other subjects too. For example, there are blogging and social media based videos that caught my eye. For Ryan, there are more than 200 developer videos to choose from. Some of the other popular categories for videos include photography, documentaries, design and web. You can filter results based on skill level so that you don’t get in over your head.
If you are considering starting a site, online business or photography business in particular, Lynda can give you a huge boost. If you’re going to school for business, design, coding, photography or other creative and/or technology based subjects, Lynda can help you visualize the material easier and maybe even help you study and perform better in school. Of course, if you’re just looking to learn for fun in your free time, they have that covered too.
