I came across this video called My All-Star Daughter (check it out below).

It’s about how important it is to encourage dreaming in children. Children are so impressionable, and it’s easy for us adults to not take their dreams or ideas seriously. I don’t think it’s so much that adults don’t believe that their children can really accomplish their dreams if they want to, but we just tend to think that what a four year old wants now isn’t what they’ll want as an adult. While in a lot of cases that is probably true, I think it’s still important to show children that we believe in their abilities and dreams even if they change their mind down the road.

As a child, I don’t remember wanting to follow any certain career path. When I dreamed of being an adult, it was all about being a mom. I wanted to spend my days raising babies and just dedicating my life to my kids. When I was around 12 a family friend had a baby who I loved to hold and play with when they came over. As they were getting ready to leave one night, the baby’s mom said to me “You’ll be a great mother some day, you know?”. It was easily the best compliment that anyone had ever given me at that point in my life. It meant SO much to me that someone believed in my dream. I try to remember how special that made me feel and to Keep Good Going by passing on that love to the kids in my life.

My 10 year old sister really likes dolphins. She became fascinated with them when she was maybe five or six. We live in Michigan where there isn’t a single aquarium (such a shame!) so she has never gotten to see a dolphin in real life, and talks about going to Sea World all the time. I told her about how some people train dolphins for a living and how she could do that someday if she wanted. She reminded me that there aren’t any aquariums in Michigan. I told her that she could alwayas move to another state as an adult, or even start up a new aqarium here if she really put her heart into it. I could see her eyes light up at this idea.
