Before I adopted my two pugs, I had heard people say that pugs didn’t shed. This is NOT true. In fact, pugs shed quite a bit because they have a double coat. My pugs are fawn in coloring meaning they have cream or a light tan fur over most of their body with black hair in a few spots such as their ears and muzzle. As a result, their hair is very visible against almost any color of clothing, flooring or furniture.

With the winter holiday’s right around the corner, most of us will be having visitors over more than usual.  If you are expecting more company in the next few months, you probably  want to be extra diligent about taking care of indoor pet hair in your home. Here are 5 Tips For Keeping a Clean Home With Indoor Shedding Pets.

5 tips for maintaining a clean house with indoor pets - and dogs that shed

1. Brush your dogs regularly. As a woman with long hair, I know that I lose the most hair when I brush my hair and when I shower. I can apply the same method of care to my dogs by brushing them regularly. I brush my dogs every few days and only stop after the brush stops gathering hair.

2. Furniture Slip Covers. My pugs get on our furniture and early on, this meant I was having to use the hose attachment on my vacuum multiple times per week. It was a lot of work! Having a few slip-covers to switch between means I can rely on my washer and dryer to wash the cover instead of vacuuming the furniture all the time.

3. Avoid your dog’s allergens. Dogs who are dealing with allergies will be itchy and will scratch, leaving more fur behind. Learn your dog’s allergies (we used an at-home dog allergy test to determine Frank & Beans’ allergies) so that you can avoid them and reduce the itching, scratching and loose hair.

4. Bathe your pets regularly. I bathe my dogs every 2-3 weeks (and brush them before bathing to avoid clogging the drain). I use a moisturizing shampoo to avoid having their skin get dried out. For my indoor dogs, bathing every 2-3 weeks is often enough to keep them from getting stinky and keeps their skin from getting dried out as well.

5. Neato Robot Vacuums. These vacuums have regularly been given the title “best for pets” by industry experts and publications. These vacuums can be scheduled to run at a set time each day, have no winding cord and are bagless. They use smart navigation to access even the nooks and crannies in your home with its powerful suction. The Neato BotvisionTM can even navigate around objects, under beds, across surfaces and into tight corners. The vacuum uses the same laser-guided navigation as the Google driverless car! For more pet shedding solutions, visit the Neato Robotics website and put “Shed Solutions Guide” in the search bar to bring up a guide with more advice.
