My dogs like toys and they regularly use their dog beds. Yet, when it comes to giving them gifts I know that nothing compares to a highly desired, long-lasting chew. I did a types of dog chews comparison back in September and several items from Jones Natural Chews made our top choices. My dogs love Jones Natural Chews ligaments, bully sticks, ears and more. I love their variety bags because they are super affordable and include several different types of chews so my dogs don’t get bored with a single type of chew.
For our holiday gift guide Jones sent over some new chew types for my dogs to try. Once the holiday gift guide craziness dies down I’ll be adding them to the chew comparison blog post as well but I wanted to share them with you all now so that you would see my thoughts on them before Christmas.
The new chew types that we tried included the 20 count variety bag, “the other ear”, windees (beef trachea), and wheezer sticks. We were also sent two products specifically made for Christmas – Christmas woofermen, and candy canes.
The 20 count variety bag (pictured on left) includes some different items than the 19 count bags (pictured on right) include. As I mentioned in my other Jones Natural Chews review, my dogs love all the items in the 19 count bags, so we were eager to try the 20 count bags which include some different types of chews. Here is what the 19 count bag included:
Six pig skin rolls, six beef ligaments, six ears and a bully stick.
Here is what our 20 count bag included: 2 hooves, six rib bones, six pig ear pieces and six steer stick pieces.
beef rib bones, beef hooves, pork skin rolls, pig ear pieces, and beef bully sticks.
For the most part, I quit buying bones for my pugs because in the past they would chew the skin, meat and marrow portions off of bones and then would stop chewing on them. So I was really surprised that they continued to chew on the beef rib bones off and on for much longer. These are thinner bones that they could easily manage which I think was part of why they liked them. They also dwindled in size very slowly over time, where as their previous bones they never even made a dent in so I think they were easier for my dogs to chew. My dogs are senior pugs so these bones may not be as ideal for bigger and/or younger dogs if they could break off pieces easier so it makes sense that the 20 count bags are recommended for small and medium-sized dogs. They seemed perfect for my pugs!
We had a similarly positive experience with the beef hooves. The edges of the hooves were thinner than other beef hooves that we have had in the past, and seemed lighter overall. As a result, my pugs could carry them in their mouths easier and chewed on them for longer than larger, heavier hooves that we had purchased in the past. Another win!
We had tried pork skin rolls, bully sticks and pig ear pieces in the past so I wasn’t surprised that my dogs loved those pieces from our variety bag as well. The entire variety bag was well enjoyed so I was really happy with it. I am excited that I now know I can buy both types of variety bags from Jones and everything will be well received by the pugs.
The other ear pig chews look really similar to pig ears but they are actually made out of pig chin. I couldn’t really tell the difference between “the other ears” and actual ears without checking the labels. The other ear chews seemed to last my dogs about 15 minutes each and they seemed just as excited to get “the other ear” as they were to get an ear chew.
The wheezer sticks are thin chews that are made out of beef esophagus. These lasted my pugs about 10-15 minutes each. These crumbled a little bit so I only feed them to my dogs when they are on hard flooring so I can easily sweep up the mess afterwards.
The windees are beef trachea that are available in 6 and 12 inch sizes. The 6 inch ones that we were sent were a bit smaller around than other trachea chews that we had tried before so my dogs were able to chew them without a problem. The 12 inch chews were a bit too big around so we use a hacksaw to cut them intos horter pieces. My dogs love the windee rings from Jones Natural Chews so I wasn’t surprised that the full size windees were another favorite! For my pugs, cutting trachea into 3 inch pieces gives them about 45 minutes of “chew time”.
The woofermen are adorable treats that are shaped like gingerbread men. For my pugs these weren’t long-lasting chews but instead large treats as they were consumed in just a minute or two but both pugs were excited to get them.
The candy-canes are just cane-cane shaped bully sticks. I have yet to meet a dog that doesn’t enjoy bully sticks and the shape of these makes them perfect Christmas gifts or stocking stuffers for pups. Plus, the twist at the end makes them a bit more interesting for dogs to chew and seems to make them last a little bit longer.
Once again, we were really happy with everything that we tried from the Jones Natural Chews brand. You can find Jones Natural Chews at pet stores and farm supply stores. I live in a fairly rural area but I can buy these in town at my local Tractor Supply Co store. Check out the retail stores tab on the Jones Natural Chews website to see which stores near you carry the brand.
