Sometimes I wish I could experience downtown small businesses from before I was born. Seeing old photos of cities where every building downtown was occupied by an independently owned business excites me. I was born too late for my local area to be dominated by mom and pop businesses, but I’m so thankful for the ones that still exist. One of my favorite parts of visiting any city is checking out the local restaurants and stores. The atmosphere of a small business just feels so much different than walking into a massive department store or popular chain business. I love how the workers from small businesses tend to be really knowledgeable about the products they sell. In many big stores if you ask a worker where to find a product, they will have to refer to another worker to even tell you where in the store the product is – they certainly don’t know anything about the product itself.
Baby stores are one of my favorite types of small businesses. I have a big extended family and have been to more baby showers and first birthday parties than I could guess. Yet, each baby that we welcome into the family is special and precious, so I find that I like to seek out unique products that aren’t found in every single store – to give the baby a truly unique gift.
Brixy is a trade association that unites independently owned baby stores in the US and Canada to help the small businesses offer the same discounts as national chains.
