how to save money at dollar general

For a year I lived right next to a Dollar General so I became a pretty frequent Dollar General shopper. During that time I learned several ways to save money at Dollar General, and now for 2016 there is a brand new method to add to the list.

  1. Shop weekly deals. Check out the Dollar General sale ad before visiting to see what deals are going on. It’s pretty common for sale prices to be a 20 to 30 percent savings over the regular price.
  2. Use coupons! Coupons are a great way to save on items that aren’t on sale, or to get awesome deals on items that are on sale because your coupon will lower your out-of-pocket cost even lower than the sale price. Jump down below to learn more about using coupons at Dollar General.
  3. Buy more when prices are low. If you are able to find a great deal on an item (such as having coupons for a product that is on sale so you can save 40-50%) buy two or three of the item instead of just one if it’s something you regularly buy that won’t go bad quickly.
  4. Check clearance. My local Dollar General has three places in the store where clearance items are stored. One is an entire aisle of heavily discounted items that are household, cleaning, toy etc related. Another is about half a shelf at the back of the grocery area that is the food clearance area. The last one is back by the office supplies and will have discounted office, toy and pet items on a shelf. Your store may vary so just quickly browse the store to find your store’s clearance areas.
  5. Shop on $5 off coupon days. It’s common for Dollar General to offer $5 off any $25 or $5 off any $30 order, usually on weekends. You can use this coupon with coupons for individual products (as long as your total still meets the $25 or $30 requirement) to save extra!

Coupons at Dollar General are now SO easy.

Dollar General recently rolled out a digital coupon program. You download the app and log-in with your phone number. You select which coupons you plan to use. You do not have to print the coupons, you just save them to the app. When you purchase products at Dollar General, use the debit card machine to select the dollar general coupon button. You put in your phone number that is associated with your app account and the digital coupons that you selected will automatically be taken off your order price as long as you purchased the items that they are used for.

I recently tried out the Dollar General digital coupon program. I needed paper towel and I saw that Dollar General was offering a $1.00 off Scott paper towel coupon on the app. I clipped it on the app, went to Dollar General and purchased the paper towel and used the debit card machine to have the coupon taken off. I loved how I didn’t have to dig through a newspaper to find and cut out the coupon, or use up paper and ink printing it off. I enjoy using coupons of all types, but even if you aren’t one to take the time to coupon the old way you should consider the digital coupon program because it’s so quick and easy.

Scott towels choose a sheet

I love Scott paper products because they’re the perfect mix of value, softness and quality. The choose a size towels last longer because I can use a small sheet for small jobs so less gets wasted. It’s a high quality product that doesn’t waste time or money-making their product pretty or frilly, it’s just a great product at a good price. Plus, now through the end of February at Dollar General they have bonus packs!

• SCOTT® 1000 Bath Tissue, 16 pack (2 Free Rolls)

• SCOTT® Choose-A-Sheet Paper Towels, Mega Roll 6 Pack (Bonus 15% Sheets)

• SCOTT® Extra Soft Bath Tissue, Double Roll 16 pack (2 Free Rolls)

There’s not a Dollar General close by but there is a 99 cent store, which has great savings on many brand names too. They don’t take coupons (mine doesn’t anyway) and they went from truly 99 cents to a dollar and some are $1.49, $1.99, $2.99 items. Most items are a dollar though. If you can shop when they get a new shipment in, about 3 times a week, that’s the best time for deals.

This seems like a really easy way to use coupons, I wouldn’t have to worry about remembering to bring them to the store or printing them out.

I have a Dollar General Store about a mile from my home. Love it. Couple weeks ago they had a sale on Kellogg’s products where if you buy $10.00 you save $3.00. I bought 3 boxes of Kellogg’s cereal. They were $3.50 a box. So one box of cereal I only paid .50. Thought was a bargain in itself. And I also like the $5.00 off $25.00 on Saturday coupon. Learning you have to actually spend more than $25.00 to get the $5.00 off. Bread is cheap there. And milk seems to be a lot cheaper too. Such a convenient store for me.
