I have been provided with a Nutrisystem plan in exchange for sharing my honest experience and results on my blog. All opinions are my own.

5 months on Nutrisystem

Now that Ryan has lost over 50 pounds, he regularly has people ask him how he lost the weight. Of course, his response is Nutrisystem. Most people we run into have heard of Nutrisystem, but once they learn that his weightloss has been a result of Nutrisystem they get a lot more curious. Here are the top 5 questions that he gets and his answers.

How does Nutrisystem work? Nutrisystem works by providing users with low calorie meals that are high in fiber and protein. The key to weightloss is burning more calories than you eat, so eating low calorie is always step 1 for weight-loss. In Ryan’s case, his estimated maintenence level (meaning how many calories he would have to eat to not gain OR lose) is about 2,300 calories. His Nutrisystem plan has him eating around 1800 calories a day which leaves him at a 500 calorie deficit per day, which works out to about a 3,500 calorie deficit per week. 3,500 is how many calories are in a pound so eating a 500 calorie deficit each day will result in about 1 pound lost per week. In theory he could eat 1800 calories a day of ANY food(s) and lose 1 pound per week, but fiber and protein keep you feeling fuller longer so eating fiber and protein while eating low-calorie keeps him from feeling hungry which makes the weight loss a lot easier.
How will you go off of it? Ryan plans to wait until he has hit his goal weight before he ends Nutrisystem. Once he hits his goal weight he will stop Nutrisystem and we will try to mimic the meals that he got from Nutrisystem. We won’t necessarily ‘copy’ the meals he got from Nutrisystem, but he will aim to eat the right number of calories per day, and to get a lot of protein and fiber in each of his meals.
How is the food? Pretty good. When Ryan first started Nutrisystem he ordered the meals that sounded similar to foods he had liked before starting Nutrisystem. In some cases, the Nutrisystem version of his favorite foods are still really good (he really likes Nutrisystem burgers, for example). In other cases Ryan didn’t care for the Nutrisystem version of foods (like their cheese puffs). So after his first order or two he decided to branch out and try menu items that he wasn’t so sure he would like and he found a lot that he really likes. For example, he didn’t really care for chicken before Nutrisystem but the breaded stuffed chicken breasts are his favorite Nutrisystem entree. So it take some trial and error to learn what you like but overall he likes the food.
Are you hungry all the time? Nope. Thanks to Nutrisystem having lots of fiber and protein he does not usually get hungry between meals or snacks. He has 3 meals and 3 snacks a day so he eats roughly every 3 hours which is actually more frequently than he ate before (though the meals are smaller).
What if you want to eat something not from Nutrisystem? When you sign up for Nutrisystem you get a restaurant guide to help you navigate restaurants and other situations where you might eat items not from Nutrisystem. It’s best to stick to Nutrisystem really closely, especially in the early phases until you learn more about portion sizes. However, when he does occasionally eat something that is not provided by Nutrisystem he just has to look at how many calories it was and make sure he stays within his calorie limit for the rest of the day. For example, if he ate 450 calories worth of non-Nutrisystem food, he would probably skip his Nutrisystem lunch entree (about 250 calories) and powerfuel (100 calories) and a Nutrisystem snack (100 calories) to catch back up.

Congrats on the weight loss, you look really good!! happy to hear Nutrisystem worked for you, right now I am on Weight Watchers and it’s very hard but it will be all worth it in the end!!

I know people who have succeeded on Nutrisystem and Weight Watchers. Some have gained the weight back and continue to yo-yo, which is so bad the body. I hope Oprah can finally have lasting success on her plan since so many follow her. Great the Ryan is doing so well! He’s a great role model for the plan.

I didn’t realize they had a restaurant guide for those just in case times. He’s done so well! It’s really exciting to see it work for someone. I know it’s hard to stick to a diet like this.

Great job, Ryan! It seems like a good to learn portion control and healthy eating. The key will be to maintain.
