Sumo Jerky sent me a subscription box for my review. All opinions are my own.

Beef jerky has been a favorite food of mine since childhood. Since I started paying more attention to what I was eating about 9 months ago, I realized that it’s actually a pretty healthy food. It’s the healthiest food that is in my top five so I’ve been letting myself indulge in jerky  a lot more often. It’s awesome to get a delicious ‘treat’ that is protein packed, lean and relatively low in calories.

Sumo Jerky is a subscription box (or subscription bag/envelope, really) of top rated jerky that you can have mailed directly to you each month. It’s a great way for people like me to keep a steady flow of jerky coming in! They sometimes include unique flavors and varieties that you probably haven’t tried before like pineapple jerky and other jerky will be more of a traditional or original flavor. You get to choose how many bags of jerky you get each month and there is a huge range from just 1 bag a month up to 300 a month. You can also choose between paying as you go monthly or signing up for a full year at once. If you pay for a year at once you get an extra month for free!

I was sent a six bag jerky subscription. If you opt for the 6 bag subscription the price is $39.50. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of each jerky bag. My box included jerky from three different brands which was a nice variety.

Three of my bags were from the brand Righteous Felon and the varieties were O.G Hickory, Halo Diablo, and Che-Potle guevara. These are two ounce bags and I liked how each had a distinct flavor without any of them being unbearably hot. I like jerky that is well seasoned and even a little ‘hot/spicy’ but not to the point where it takes over and you can’t taste the jerky itself.

Two of the bags were from the brand Katie’s Beef Jerky, one was original and the other was spicy. I sometimes enjoy flavored jerky but I am all about original peppered or spicy jerkies. You can’t go wrong with the classics in my opinion. These bags were also 2 oz each. The texture of this jerky was a little different from the Righteous Felon brand. I don’t really have a preferred flavor of jerky, I don’t mind the dry and soft, the oily and tough, or anywhere in between. The original was a great, classic taste and the spicy kicked the intensity up a bit but not too much in my opinion. Both were great!

The last bag was from the brand Indiana Craft Jerky. The packaging on this really tells you that this is a small operation and a symbol system on the front of each package tells you how hot and sweet each flavor is. I was sent the chipotle bbq variety which is listed as 1/3 for sweetness and 2/5 for heat and I definitely agree with that. It had a kick of heat without being particularly spicy and of course it was slightly sweet due to the bbq flavoring.

All six bags were gone within just a couple of days of delivery. Ryan & I both tried each flavor and we both enjoyed each one. It was a fun way to try new brands that we hadn’t experienced before and Sumo Jerky offers jerky at a discount compared to buying each item separately. The Sumo Jerky subscription box service is based on a price model that has a small overhead cost so you’re paying for the jerky you’re getting, where many subscription box services have a large overhead on top of the price of the products. Sumo Jerky so strongly believes in their small overhead business model that they offer a price match guarantee for anyone who subscribes to a plan that delivers 3 bags of jerky or more per month. With the price match guarantee, if you find the jerky in your Sumo Jerky subscription available at a lower price than you paid from Sumo Jerky they will refund you PLUS 10% extra!
