I recently was able to review the Peter and the Wolf in Hollywood app on my iPad. Peter and the Wolf in Hollywood is an app aimed at boys. It is an ebook with interactive features that tells the story of a boy who moves from Russia to Hollywood, where he moves in with his grandpa. He is struggling with fitting in at his new school, and coping with grieving over his parents. A wolf gets loose from the local zoo for the third time. Peter is not afraid of wolves, and he wants to help track down the wolf so that he can be a hero and get famous. He knows that getting famous in hollywood is a great way to make a lot of friends fast.
The ebook is beautifully narrated, and pauses every several seconds and asks you to page forward, so you can go at your own pace and take breaks as needed. Some pages are animated while others are not. A few times over the course of the ebook you are invited to interact with the book. For example, one scene shows the night sky and has some stars that appear brighter than others. You are invited to point out the brighter stars in a certain order to connect them to create a constellation. In other part, you find a robot parts factory and have to select robot pieces and put them onto the robots body to create a full robot.
The book is narrated by Alice Cooper which gives the eBook a fun flare. The creators sneak in positive messages (such as a few lines about respecting wild animals) while having an overall theme that will appeal to kids. I loved when Peter got to crawl into a robot that he just put together and control the robot with gears, sort of like a popular superhero character. I thought this creative use of the robot suit would appeal to most any kid, and it was made more special by the child getting to put together the robot first.
There is a lot of nice music throughout the book as well. The app has a section that lets you pick out the different musical pieces from the app to listen to them separately. That area also gives you detailed information about who created each musical piece.
Look for Peter and the Wolf in Hollywood in the iTunes store for your iPhone or iPad.

Alice Cooper AND cool music–what’s not to love with this app?! I moved to North Hollywood from Colorado and it was a bit of a change so I sure can relate to this little boy’s story. It’s a cute one for the kiddos but doubt they can appreciate Alice Cooper narrating!
