There are a lot of weight loss programs out there. On any given day I see multiple weight loss programs or products mentioned. Just browsing through my Facebook stream I see a few people in multi-level marketing programs trying to sell their particular product. I think it’s understandable that people feel overwhelmed when trying to choose a plan when there are so many options out there. I thought this week I would share why Ryan decided to try Nutrisystem.
A big factor in his decision was he knew that it worked. He had seen Laurie (who helps write for my site) lose a lot of weight on Nutrisystem in the past.
Once he decided he was ready to lose weight, and he knew Nutrisystem had worked for someone else we knew, he decided he needed to know how Nutrisystem worked. He started researching weight loss and nutrition. We honestly were pretty clueless about nutrition before beginning this journey. Neither of us grew up in families that talked about protein or calories.
We knew that weight loss was a matter of math. You have to eat fewer calories than you use on a daily basis, to put you at a calorie deficit. However, we didn’t realize how significant it was to see what your calories were coming from until he began researching. Once he learned that protein, fiber and healthy fats keep you feeling fuller longer for fewer calories, everything made sense. While technically you could lose weight by eating a low calorie diet of junk food, you would probably be left pretty hungry. On the other hand, if you eat a low calorie diet that is high in protein, fiber and healthy fats then you’ll feel less hungry and of course be healthier as a result of the more balanced diet.
Nutrisystem essentially makes calorie counting easy. Each of their entrees stays within a certain calorie range, so if you pick a breakfast, lunch, dinner and your two daily Nutrisystem-provided snacks you’ll always be within a certain calorie range. Then you add in PowerFuels (primarily meat, dairy or nut products for protein) and SmartCarbs (Fruit or whole wheat bread products for fiber) which are also within a certain calorie range. In Ryan’s case, his plan leaves him at around 1800 calories a day which is less than a man of his size and activity level expends each day so over time he will lose weight.
It all made sense. There was no gimmick or trick, it was just a convenient way to eat low calorie while focusing on protein and fiber so the calories that he consumes actually push off hunger.
We’re both so glad that he decided to give it a try because he’s now at almost 65 pounds lost. It’s been life changing.

What a great inspiration for others too. I was the only one in my family preaching fitness and good nutrition and that was in the seventies! I made it my first career and I’m sure it’s kept me healthy all these years–like it will Ryan.

It definitely makes it so much easier when you can afford to do the meals. Unfortunately I’m not in a position to do that at the moment. Maybe down the road!

I am proud of him for doing the research and sticking to it. Dieting is hard. It is good that you are supporting him in the journey.
I’m glad this has worked so well for him. Nutrition and portion size and calories are all important.
