SUNMERIT weighted blanket

I was sent a SUNMERIT weighted blanket for review. All opinions are my own. There are affiliate links in this post.

I remember first hearing of weighted blankets when I was in college studying early childhood development. They were discussed as a sensory tool, sometimes used for kids with sensory processing disorder and/or autism. Since then I’ve seen people discussing them more and more often. It feels like they have become more mainstream. Instead of being exclusively discussed as a SPD or autism tool, I’ve seen them referenced for us with anyone who could use calming such as someone with an anxiety disorder or ADHD, or just anyone who occasionally feels anxious.

I was diagnosed with ADHD and anxiety as a young teenager. I feel like I manage my symptoms pretty well and I haven’t been medicated in years. Still, I have a hard time finding calm and focus sometimes when life is hectic or stressful. While I love doing the holiday gift guide for you readers each year, it makes November and early December stressful for me as my workload increases dramatically. I’ve had some big shifts in my personal life the last couple of months which have added a lot of stress and have just left me feeling like I am being stretched a little thin. When offered the chance to try a SUNMERIT weighted blanket I thought, why not?

The blanket I was sent weighs 20 pounds. Now, 20 pounds doesn’t sound like a whole lot but when it is distributed across a blanket it becomes really awkward to carry. It’s easier to carry 20 lbs if it is in as solid, compact shape. It takes both arms and a really firm grasp to move this blanket around. This weight of blanket is recommended for people 150-200 pounds which is bigger than me but it was the smallest size listed. There is a second blanket, a 25 pound one designed for people 200+ pounds.

The blanket is 48 inches by 72 inches. Throw blankets often vary in size but average about 50×60 inches so this is slightly skinnier but also longer than the average throw blanket. The exterior is 100% cotton so it is nice and breathable. The filler that weighs the blanket down are beads which are 15% polyester and 85% glass. The blanket is quilted which keeps the beads fairly evenly distributed across the entire blanket.

I tried napping with this blanket and found that I woke up a bit sore. I think the weight of the blanket kept me from tossing and turning as much as I usually do, so I got a little stiff from being so still. That is my guess, anyway! Perhaps part of that is how it is a heavier blanket than is recommended for someone of my size. I’ve been using this blanket doubled over on my lap while working. I think it does make it easier for me to stay focused on whatever project I am working on.

Ryan also struggles with some anxiety and ADHD so I had him try the blanket as well. He gets claustrophobic fairly easily, but this brought those feelings out for him. So he didn’t care for it.

It can be used in a duvet cover to reduce the need to wash it as frequently. However, it is machine washable on gentle settings. You can purchase a SUNMERIT weighed blanket on Amazon.

Do you have a weighted blanket? I’d love to hear how you use it or how you feel it helps!

My niece has one of these for her autistic son. It really does help him sleep better. I would recommend for people to try them too.

I have a weighted blanket. I bought it in March or April of this year. I have fibromyalgia and GAD and it has helped me when I awaken in the middle of the night and have a hard time falling back to sleep. This calms me to the degree that I do get some more sleep.

  • I’ve never tried a weighted blanket before. I think one would help my son sleep better and calm him.

WOW I definitely n3ed to get one of these maybe 2 I have 3 sons all with special needs. My 17 with austism, my 8 year old ADHD and my 13 year old Bi-polar. Its very challenging having one child with special needs but 3 of them is a hand full, very stressful

I have a weighted blanket and love it! I tend to get hot but have to a few blankets on me for the weight. I sleep better and it keeps me calm in the evenings when I’m sitting in bed!

I’ve never tried a weighted blanket. In the winter I do like having several blankets and feel cozy with them.

I have always wanted o try a weighted blanket. I think I try doing iton my own as I always have heaps and really cant sleep without a blanket in even the warmest weather. This sounds comforting, and the benefits sound amazing.
