Are you looking for a better way to enhance your child’s education? Need something to better stimulate their minds?

Look no further, Monster Education is here with our Singapore Math class, ready to challenge your little scholar. With this course, we will teach your child the foundations of math to help them become exquisite problem solvers and improve cognitive function along the way.

Let’s look into why this method is so successful and how your child will thrive with the Singapore Math method.

Why is Singapore Math So Successful?

Children in the United States have been falling behind in mathematics for years, while in Singapore their students are thriving. Teaching memorization and focusing on test-taking have taken over actual math skills in the United States.

While with the Common Core curriculum implemented in 2008, mathematical scores have increased, the US is still behind in math literacy global ratings. Singapore majorly renovated its math learning process in the 1980s to what we in the US refer to as Singapore Math. Singapore Math was introduced in the United States in 1998 and the Common Core curriculum was arguably to some degree modeled after Singapore Math.

Singapore Math students are consistently ranked highest in math literacy. This is because its students are taught how to solve the problems in visual and practical ways. Focusing on less material in a more in-depth way, students are able to perfect each stage before building onto it in upper levels.

The Singapore Math methods can seem difficult to those who haven’t learned this way. This method of learning needs to be thought of as a workout for your child’s brain. They are learning to solve problems using visual techniques, which, in return, will increase their cognitive abilities.

Commonly known as CPA, the Concrete, Pictorial, and Abstract stages are the three major parts of Singapore Math. These concepts collectively produce critical mathematical thinking abilities to better understand number sense and create the ability to solve large math problems in your head.

Basics of Singapore Math

The Concrete stage teaches younger children to visualize their math problems. By physically seeing objects and moving the objects around, they are learning to add and subtract in a hands-on way. Students who are Visual and Kinesthetic learners are more engaged this way, rather than only catering to Auditory and Reading/Writing learners, which the traditional United States mathematics teachings favor.

The Pictorial stage is where the students are shown a diagram that represents the math problem or concept. This stage can be used to teach addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions. The Abstract stage shows the students the actual equations, by using numbers and symbols along with bar models and diagrams.

With number bonds and bar models, students are able to physically see the math problem playing out. Bar models are very similar to Common Core’s ten frames, both allow the student to see what is missing in order to add or subtract to get to the whole.

Later in their education, your child will be able to mentally visualize any math problems and know mental strategies to solve any math equation.

Is Singapore Math Right for Your Child?

Yes. Singapore math is right for every child.

Singapore Math increases mathematical thinking. Some may say that it overly complicates mathematical principles, but that’s because they don’t understand that these concepts are increasing cognitive function as a whole.

Singapore Math might have an extra step or two compared to the traditional teachings of 1+1=2, but once your child gets to higher-level classes. The equation 628×3 will form in their brain as 600×3 + 20×3 + 8×3, which is 1800+60+24, so 628×3=1884.

Being able to do large math problems in your head is an incredible skill. When learning the Singapore Math way, your child will acquire a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.

In current school settings Singapore Math, which Common Core math imitates, can be difficult to teach. The math teachers have learned to teach math concepts a certain way, so the implantation of a new strategy can frustrate the teachers. It is important to find teachers who specialize in Singapore Math and who completely understand the concepts that they are teaching.

Monster Education Can Help!

Singapore Math encourages mathematical thinking rather than memorization. This increases the child’s ability to solve math problems in their head, and as a result, increases cognitive function. Singapore Math will not only help your child in mathematics, but it will also provide the child with excellent problem-solving skills.

Let the incredible teachers at Monster Education help take your child’s skills to the next level. Enroll them in our Singapore Math classes and give them a leg up and build a strong mathematical foundation. Our teachers are highly experienced with Singapore Math and clases are taught in very small sizes of 6 students and under. Monster Education’s weekly after school and summer classes will set your kids up for success in algebra and every other aspect of their education.

Learning math concepts from an early age is so important. This looks like such a good method to help kids learn and be comfortable with using their math skills.
