If you are a pet lover or owner then you know that your pets are the children that you never gave birth to. Whether they are scaled, finned, feathered or furred you love them and you want to do everything in your power to take care of them. And of course you want to spoil them rotten because they are your children, your best friend, your permanent companion and you want to show them how much they mean to you with more than baby talk and warm cuddles. I always check out the pet section at the local store, or visit physical pet stores in search of toys I think my dogs will enjoy. I’m also a certified member of the coupon revolution and every time I visit one of my favorite coupon sites I also check to see if they have any coupons or Sears.com promo codes on pet accessories, pet care and pet toys, just in case I see something I like! But the one thing I’ve learned is that not all chew toys are equal and in fact some of them are actually dangerous for my beloved furry friend. There are loads of chew toys that are made from PVC and while you may love the fact that they are more durable than most other toys, they are not all great. PVC gets its chewy texture from chemicals called phthalates but the grinding, heat and moisture that comes with chewing can break down the plastic. And when these phthalates are deposited in your dog’s body it increases their risk of kidney, liver and reproductive problems. So always look for toys that are marked ‘Phthalate Free’, just to be on the safe side! You also need to take care with the size of the toys you’re buying. There are several weight to toy size ratios but a good rule of thumb is to watch for when your pooch yawns and their throat is opened wide. Now any toy that you get should be about 10% larger so that it can’t get accidentally swallowed. But don’t get something too big either as they can hurt themselves trying to stretch their jaws around a toy so they can carry it to their favorite hidey hole or when they’re trying to convince you to play with them! Now while you might think that all natural products are the answer you should be careful of them too! Many rawhide toys have been put through some intense processing involving dozens of chemicals before they ever make it to the shelves. For example this could be something like bleaching it before adding color. While most big retailers have similar guidelines as those for children’s it is always better to shop wisely and you can also use your mobile to check out the pros and cons of anything you may find while shopping online or in store. Bones are also not fail safes as the hard exteriors can crack teeth and they are broken down into smaller pieces which are choking hazards. Luckily you get some funky toys that allow you to stuff an inner core with treats, food or even peanut butter and if you want to extend the chewing time you can freeze them before handing over. If you have a dog that likes to bury their bones you may need to do some digging but it’s worth it!
