I was contacted by Susan Heim, one of the co-authors of the book Oh baby! 7 ways a baby will chance your life in the first year, to see about doing a review and giveaway of the book. Upon hearing the name of the book, I thought “Seven ways? just seven?” But by browsing through the book I learned that the authors aren’t trying to say there is only seven ways, they are referring to seven main areas of your life that will be affected. They are listed as
1. A baby will open your heart…like no other love can or ever will
2. A child helps you develop a durable, reliable, and authentic sense of self.
3. Love, marriage, and a baby carriage – surviving and thriving as a couple
4. Making a living and raising a child – a baby will change your views, and goals, on both.
5. A baby creates family ties – and bonds that bind.
6. A baby will cause you to examine your beliefs, and question your faith.
7. Friends and your baby – you’ll make many friends, and lose a few.
Each of these seven areas that a baby will change your life, have two sections, one that focuses on the positive ways that a baby will affect you in that area, and the other section focuses on the struggles that change will cause.
There are many pages with ‘take action!’ boxes that express ways you can work to handle the change going on. There are also many pages that feature ‘questions for discussion’ that help create discussion between you and the other parent, and also help to make the topics being discussed more personal.
I feel that this book would make a great addition to any pregnant couple or new parents’ ‘baby library’
